A New Origin of DCs Amazons Has Changed Their Story Completely

Warning: contains major spoilers for Wonder Woman: Historia #1!

Fans may think they know all about DC’s Amazons, but thanks to a new Black Label series, everything has changed. Wonder Woman: Historia #1 creates a completely different origin for the warrior women. Whatever fans thought they knew about Mount Olympus, Themyscira, and the Amazons’ birth is out the window – for the better it seems.

Wonder Woman: Historia #1 has the creative team of Phil Jimenez, Hi-Fi, Arif Prianto, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Clayton Cowles. The first issue reveals how the Amazons came to be created, how they were first organized, and it begins to tell the origins of Hippolyta – whose story is currently different from what Wonder Woman’s fans have seen in previous comics.

In this new chronicle of their history, Hippolyta is not the queen of the Amazons. In fact, at the start of the issue, there are no Amazons. The goddesses of Olympus have become frustrated with the ways of all men, including the male deities they co-exist with. The suffering of women is far too great to be tolerated, resulting in a major act of rebellion – the goddesses join forces to give gifts to select women they will into creation. Each of the six goddesses has their own tribe of warrior women, but not a single one of these women is Hippolyta.

The first issue of Wonder Woman: Historia reveals that Hippolyta is simply a mortal. She lives in a society she isn’t completely satisfied with and commits an act that she is ashamed of. In her attempt to remedy it, she becomes worn by the elements and eventually finds herself face-to-face with a small band of Amazon warriors. This is where her journey begins, though this beginning and her next steps will be done alone. It is not yet clear how the tribes of Amazons will grow – or what could unite them into one group under a single queen. Furthermore, Themyscira has not yet been revealed, or any other home for these free, strong women. One thing is certain, however: this isn’t the standard Wonder Woman story fans have come to expect.

Wonder Woman’s story is rather well-known. She is a princess with incredible powers, who lives on an island full of seemingly immortal women. She either enters a competition or rebels against the rules of her home, traveling to the world of men, where she becomes a hero. The history of the Amazons has been told in parts, with varying versions, but none have been quite like this – and few are begun at a point before the Amazons have formed as a sisterhood. Wonder Woman: Historia is one of the more ambitious stories involving the character and the origin of her home and people. Canon or not, this is proving to be a must-read series for fans of Wonder Woman and the Amazons. The lore of their culture and world has rarely been examined as thoroughly as it is within this comic. DC’s Amazons have a richer, deeper history than fans could have ever imagined and one can’t help but wonder what Hippolyta’s journey in it will be.
