A New Update Is About To Make Your OnePlus 9s Camera Even Better

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro already have pretty great cameras, but thanks to a substantial software update rolling out now, they’re about to get even better. Released in late March, the OnePlus 9 series has remained at the top of this year’s Android flagships. Whether someone chooses the 9 or 9 Pro, they’re in for speedy performance, ridiculous charge speeds, and powerful software.

For 2021, OnePlus’s biggest focus was the camera department. The company partnered with industry legend Hasselblad to create its best smartphone cameras to date. The higher-end OnePlus 9 Pro is especially impressive, touting a 48MP primary camera, 50MP ultra-wide camera, 8MP telephoto camera, and 2MP monochrome camera. Pair all of that with color calibration from Hasselblad itself, and the OnePlus 9 Pro has proven to be a formidable opponent in the mobile camera niche.

In an effort to make the OnePlus 9 camera experience better than it is today, OnePlus just announced a major software update that focuses primarily on the photography experience. The flagship addition with this update is something called ‘XPan Mode.’ Similar to Hasselblad’s iconic XPan film camera, XPan Mode on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro allows users to capture images with a distinct 65:21 aspect ratio — the same one used on the actual XPan camera. There are two focal lengths to choose from (30mm and 45mm), and each has a resolution “over 20MP” to ensure there’s plenty of detail to work with. Outside of the utility of this new shooting mode, OnePlus has also nailed its presentation. A preview box showcases the frame lines seen on the real XPan camera, an animation mimics the phone developing negative film after taking a shot, and users can shoot in either color or black & white.

Other Camera Improvements In This OnePlus 9 Update

XPan is certainly the star of the show for this update, but it’s also far from the only camera upgrade OnePlus is bringing. Another tweak folks can look forward to is better HDR results. OnePlus says it’s “optimized HDR frame retrieving algorithms” and reduced the amount of noise present in certain scenes. Take a lot of pictures in Auto Mode? Here, OnePlus fixed over-sharpening issues and the “stability” of auto white balance. Speaking of auto white balance, it’s also been optimized to work better when switching between the primary and ultra-wide cameras.

And that’s not all. Rounding out the camera improvements are reduced over-brightening in Nightscape Mode, better dynamic range in low-light settings, improved handling of moving subjects, up to 50 percent faster load times to open the camera app, and reduced shutter lag “in some scenarios.” Playing around with XPan should be a lot of fun, but when it comes to normal day-to-day use, all of these other updates could be even more impactful. Outside of camera upgrades, this latest update also brings optimized wireless charging and the September 2021 security patch.

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will soon be faced with profound camera competition from Apple and Google. With all of these updates now in tow, OnePlus has a better chance of competing against them over the holiday season. Whether someone’s most excited for XPan Mode or all of the bug fixes, this update is rolling out now to OnePlus 9 handsets around the globe.
