A Pilot Dropped His iPhone From A Moving Plane And It Survived

An iPhone was dropped, according to the pilot, from a moving airplane, and the shocked reactions when it was discovered that Apple’s smartphone survived are epic. While this type of AirDrop is not recommended for the long-term health of the device, reports of drops from a height and being submerged deep underwater for long periods of time make headlines periodically. Thankfully for the owners of these devices, Apple’s last few generations have seen durability continue to improve.

The iPhone, like every other flagship smartphone, is upgraded with stronger glass every few years. The iPhone 7 was the first to add water resistance and that has gradually improved over the years. In 2018, the iPhone XS received an update that increased the safe water depth to two meters, and the 2020 iPhone 12 can plunge up to six meters underwater and remain there for up to thirty minutes. The iPhone 12 was also the first model to enjoy the protection of Ceramic Shield glass, a special formulation developed by Apple (with Corning’s assistance) that includes ceramic crystals and increases drop resistance greatly.

It isn’t clear which model of iPhone was dropped from a moving plane in Orlando Florida, but its incredible durability surprised several airport workers involved with the runway recovery. The pilot reported that the iPhone was just to the right of the centerline and the ground crew was able to locate the phone and recover it. The air traffic control tower noted that this would be a good story for Apple if it still works. Apparently, the dropped Apple phone was still able to power on and the immediate follow-up question was ‘how shattered is the screen?’ Incredibly, the reply from the operations crew was that the iPhone was in perfect shape. The Orlando ground crew exclaimed ‘No way an iPhone fell off a plane going 50-60 miles an hour and didn’t break the screen,’ before going on to say that they’d never heard of an iPhone falling more than four feet without breaking in half. The whole hilarious exchange was captured and shared on the VASAviation YouTube channel.

How The Dropped iPhone Was Found

The pilot that dropped the iPhone referenced a ‘satellite’ when sharing where to look, stating ‘about a thousand feet down, just to the right of the centerline.’ The iPhone doesn’t have satellite technology, but the Find My app can track an iPhone that has been lost, stolen, or dropped from an airplane. Apple’s Find My app can even give the current GPS location or cellular position if the phone is still getting either signal. The ground crew was also amazed by the accuracy of the reported location.

This isn’t the first time an iPhone has been subjected to a long fall or rough landing. An iPhone X fell over 11,000-feet and survived in August of 2021, according to a Diamond Aviators forum post. While dropped in a rural area, it fell near a cell tower, which was critical in being able to find it again. It might have helped that the phone landed in a field rather than on a hard surface considering the iPhone X does not come with Ceramic Shield. The takeaway from these survival stories is that Apple’s iPhone is just as rugged as any other phone, possibly more so with the Find My capability greatly increasing the chances of recovery of what might be a surprisingly undamaged device.
