The latest Animal Crossing: New Horizons patch has added a new way to obtain the mysterious musical decorations known as Gyroids, with fragments now washing up on players’ beaches. Gyroids were part of the sizable Animal Crossing 2.0 update that added a slew of content to the game including new items, cooking, and characters from previous games.

A fan favorite for many, Gyroids have been a part of every Animal Crossing game to date. These musical objects will dance along to music they’re placed by, and contribute their own on-beat sounds to the mix. To obtain them, players must first find Gyroid fragment pieces – once found, they can be buried and watered to produce a fully-fledged Gyroid the next day. Until now, players had a couple different ways to obtain these fragments: digging them up on the newly-added Kapp’n’s Mystery Islands Tours, or digging them up on their own island after rain or snow. Animal Crossing has received patches since its release, and while some add new content, many are small and nearly imperceptible. The game’s latest 2.0.4 patch was a small one, seemingly there to fix a few bugs – notably a glitch that made ACNH villagers appear nude.

Twitter user rosiewosieacnh shared a picture of their beach post-update this week, showing a Gyroid fragment that had washed up on the shore of their island. According to Destructoid, she isn’t the only one to experience this – despite the new patch initially seeming inconsequential, many players began to notice Gyroid fragments washing up on their shores following the update. Although it isn’t a daily occurrence like bottled DIY recipes, it seems fragments can now be found seaside on players’ home turf. There’s been some speculation over whether this new fragment delivery system was intentional or not; it wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo has patched some issues while creating new ones. However, many think the addition was referenced – albeit vaguely – in the 2.0.4 patch notes that state changes were made “for more enjoyable gameplay.”

This new way to acquire Gyroids is great news for a lot of Animal Crossing fans. Many players may not be satisfied with the rate at which they’re getting their fragments – especially if they’re trying to create a big musical project that requires lots of ACNH Gyroids. For some, Kapp’n’s Mystery Island tours aren’t even accessible yet – these are only unlocked after players have achieved a 3-star rating and had K.K. Slider come to their island. Until now, these players could only acquire fragments after bouts of rain or snow, making Gyroid collection somewhat difficult. The prospect of beach fragments will also undoubtedly inspire a lot of players to start combing their beaches again, even veteran players who no longer have an interest in collecting the other daily beach objects like shells and DIYs.

This small but meaningful addition is a perfect example of what fans love about Animal Crossing: small, delightful surprises that aren’t explicitly stated and must be discovered independently. It also demonstrates continued care by Nintendo when it comes to patches for the game. Even though the 2.0 update is set to be its final major patch, Animal Crossing is far from dead. With the vague language of the patch (with regard to “enjoyable gameplay”), this discovery begs the question as to what other new things there may be to discover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
