ACNHs 20 Update & Happy Home Paradise Are Signs Of A Sequel

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise paid DLC have recently been released, and may indicate a sequel is in the works. The free 2.0 update includes new items, tools, NPCs, villagers, and ways to decorate both the player’s island and the homes on them. This massive update is game changing, and by being free, it’s one that all players can enjoy.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Happy Home Paradise paid DLC that released alongside the free 2.0 update has also introduced plenty of game changing features. In this DLC, players can design dream vacation homes for the Animal Crossing villagers that come to visit, as well as important buildings such as hospitals and schools. As players progress through this DLC based on Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, they unlock items and abilities that they can take back to their main island and continue to use.

It might seem like a great opportunity for Nintendo to continue working on DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons now that these updates have renewed players’ interest in the title. It would also make sense because of the foundation New Horizons is built upon: its biggest appeal is how players can always return to the game and endlessly customize their island. While it may sometimes seem easier to simply start a new island in New Horizons, continuing to work on an island and watch it change is a big part of New Horizons’ game design. No matter how much work a player has put into their island, they can always continue to change it as they please. That means the next major installment in the Animal Crossing series needs to have a significant amount of differences compared to New Horizons, even more than what was added in the 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise updates. With the confirmation that 2.0 is the last big free update the game will receive, and that Happy Home Paradise is the only paid DLC planned for New Horizons, it’s likely that Nintendo’s developers will be putting all their focus on the next major Animal Crossing title.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2 Compared To ACNH

ACNHs 20 Update & Happy Home Paradise Are Signs Of A Sequel

Animal Crossing: New Horizons puts a lot of emphasis on the player directly controlling their island layout. Unlike in New Leaf, players in New Horizons can directly control where villager houses go. They can also design waterways and even elevation, while in New Leaf the town’s river couldn’t be changed, and the only elevation was that the beaches were closer to water level than the rest of the town. Although some features, like Brewster’s café, took a while to be added in to New Horizons, the way players approach New Horizons is different compared to New Leaf because of all the ways the game allows players to fully customize their island.

Animal Crossing’s next game following Animal Crossing: New Horizons will need to feature a similar, if not greater, level of changes between the two games. Features that players really enjoy, such as creating their own pathways and the option to move around buildings, will likely remain in an ACNH 2, and could potentially be improved further. But to justify players starting an all new game instead of staying with their highly developed and personal islands, Animal Crossing’s next game will need to include a lot of new features to allow it to stand out. This is especially important because many players have already invested a lot of time into New Horizons. The next game needs to feel distinct enough to allow it to stand as its own title, rather than feeling like something that could have been Animal Crossing: New Horizons DLC.

Focusing Development On Animal Crossing’s Next Game

Development for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is said to have began in 2012. The game was originally slated for a 2019 release, but was delayed to March 2020 to avoid crunch. This means the game received up to eight years of development time. 2012 was the year Animal Crossing: New Leaf released in Japan, meaning the development team got to work on New Horizons close to or after New Leaf finished development.

But just because New Leaf was released didn’t mean it was never worked on again. The Welcome amiibo free major update for New Leaf released worldwide in 2016, during which time Animal Crossing: New Horizons was already in development. The Welcome amiibo update added a huge amount of content, similar to New Horizons’ 2.0 update. New villagers, items, Animal Crossing amiibo compatibility, and more was included as part of this free content addition.

Just like with New Leaf leading into New Horizons, work on the next Animal Crossing game may have already begun. But with 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise confirmed as the last major DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the developers can put all their focus on the next Animal Crossing game. Otherwise, there would likely have been more opportunities for New Horizons DLC in the meantime.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sequel On The Next Nintendo Console

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ release was a huge boon to the Nintendo Switch, and fans will likely be looking forward to the next entry in the series whenever the next Nintendo console is released. Nintendo consoles tend to last anywhere from five to seven years before a new console enters the market. The more financially successful consoles, such as the Wii and Nintendo DS, tend to stay around longer than the less successful consoles, such as the Nintendo GameCube and Wii U. The Nintendo Switch’s success, combined with the only recent release of the OLED model, makes it safe to guess that the next Nintendo console won’t be coming around until at least 2023 or 2024.

This gives the Animal Crossing: New Horizons sequel plenty of time to be developed, as well as an early release title for the next Nintendo console. With the immense success of New Horizons, having a mainline Animal Crossing game as an early title for Nintendo’s next console will be a great way to encourage players to upgrade to the new console. Depending on the overall scheduling, the next Animal Crossing game may even end up as a launch title for the next console, which would prove to be an even greater benefit.
