Actor John Leguizamo Todd McFarlane Team For New Superhero Comic

Actor John Leguizamo is teaming with superstar artist Todd McFarlane to bring readers a new comic series Phenomx. Created and co-written by Leguizamo, the Image Comics book features an all-star roster of Latino talent, and will be in stores and digital November 3.

Beyond being a highly acclaimed actor in Hollywood, John Leguizamo is also a producer, director and screenwriter. His acting credits include Super Mario Bros, Son of Sam, Moulin Rouge and John Wick; he also starred in the comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. He has done voice work in animation, such as the Ice Age films, as well as television. In 1997, Leguizamo starred in the live-action Spawn adaptation, playing the Clown, the movie’s villain. While working on the film, he met Todd McFarlane and the two became friends. Flash forward 20 years and the two reconnected at the New York City Comic Con and decided to collaborate on a project. In 2019, Leguizamo announced a Kickstarter for the project and now he and his collaborators are ready to share Phenomx with the world.

Image released more details about the project, including a plot synopsis and a look at the first issue’s cover. Phenomx is the story of Max Gomez, falsely accused of a crime and sent to prison. While there, he participates in a mysterious experiment in exchange for his freedom. Max’s freedom comes at a price—he now has shape-shifting abilities and is drafted into a “superpowered war” being fought in New York City. McFarlane was excited to have Leguizamo on board, calling him “multi-talented” and is glad to see him bring his talents to the comics field.

For Leguizamo, Phenomx is about bringing Latino representation to comics. He noted the lack of representation not only in comics, but in Hollywood as well. He feels it is important to support Latino artists, and Phenomx boasts an all Latino creative team, including artist Chris Batista, Sabrina Cintron and Christopher Sotomayor; covers will be provided by Jim Muniz, Jose Marzan Jr and Juan Fernandez. McFarlane agrees with Leguizamo, and hopes that fans enjoy Phenomx, regardless of their background.

John Leguizamo has made a career out of breaking down barriers and opening doors. His comedy anthology series House of Bugging was one of the first all-Latino comedies to air in America. Leguizamo has acted in many movies and television episodes and has been recognized with awards for his work. He has also reached beyond acting and into the world of directing and writing—justifying McFarlane’s praise. Now readers get to see Leguizamo bring his sensibilities to comics this November.

Latino representation is slowly increasing, and actor John Leguizamo teaming with Todd McFarlane and Image will continue this legacy in Phenomx.
