Adult Swims Rick & Morty and More Getting Digital Short Spinoffs

Adult Swim announced four new digital short series spun-off from various hits, including Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, are in development. Ricky and Morty, from Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, centers on the misadventures of the titular mad scientist and his grandson across the multiverse, as well as the troubles their dysfunctional family face daily. Seth Green and Matthew Senreich’s sketch series Robot Chicken has been a hit for the network for 16 years, having garnered six Emmy wins and two Annie Awards.

Your Pretty Face, created by Dave Willis and Casper Kelly, centers on associate demon Gary attempting to capture souls on Earth to climb the corporate ladder of Hell in a workplace comedy format. After four seasons, Adult Swim announced a one-off extended finale special in the works while the door was left open for potential online digital shorts. ATHF was one of the first and longest-running programs on Adult Swim and was the first to receive a theatrical adaptation, with a sequel currently in the works alongside film adaptations of Metalocalypse and The Venture Bros.

The four new shows are titled The Vindicators, Aquadonk Side Pieces, Alabama Jackson, and Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell: The Animated Series. The first will center on the superhero team from the season 3 episode of Rick and Morty and will be executive produced by Erica Rosbe, Sarah Carbiener, Harmon, and Roiland. The second will act as a continuation of ATHF and catch fans up with the later lives of side characters and villains, including The Mooninites, The Plutonians, MC Pee Pants, The Frat Aliens, Happy Time Harry, Handbanana, and The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past. The third will focus on the smooth-talking time traveler invented at a Robot Chicken San Diego Comic-Con panel by Faison and produced by Green and Senreich’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. The fourth will carry on the events of Your Pretty Face and act as a fifth season to the Emmy-nominated hit short series. Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim, said in a statement:

“We see it as our mission to put something hilarious within a fingers’ swipe of anyone on the planet. These shorts are a way to meet the next generation of Adult Swim fans where they are, while giving our creators another format to play in and innovate around.”

Across all of their various runs, the Adult Swim shows have done a solid job of delivering out-of-the-box content and amassing cult followings. While Your Pretty Face is still building a larger fanbase, Robot Chicken and ATHF continue to maintain their grips on the adult animated fields after over a decade of being on the air. Whereas some fans are more interested in the proper returns of ATHF and R&M, there’s no denying some form of content from both franchises would be welcome as they wait for more.

Plus, while Your Pretty Face might be changing up its format, the digital shorts don’t mark the end or only avenue for each title. With Rick and Morty set to return for its fifth season in June and the ATHF movie sure to arrive sometime next year, fans won’t have to wait for long to see their fan-favorite characters coming back. In the meantime, viewers will have to wait and see how the spin-offs turn out when they debut sometime this year.
