Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

Adventure Time is a cartoon known for its characters, many of whom fans adore. From chilling and downright terrifying villains to goofy and lovable side characters, there’s much variety and a lot to appreciate. Many fans feel that some of these characters deserved more screen time.

However, there are some characters that viewers got downright sick of, either because they saw too much of them, or because they were unappealing, or in some cases, for both of these reasons. Here are five characters viewers wanted to see more of along with five that overstayed their welcome.

10 Underused: Party God

Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

An entity that appears as a giant floating wolf head wearing a baseball hat, Party God lives up to his name by partying nonstop. Besides unending partying, the Party God can grant wishes to those who appease him. Although we do get more insight into Party God’s personal life in “The Party’s Over, Isla De Señorita” when it’s revealed that Island Lady is his girlfriend, he spends most of the episode absent, continuing to party across the Land of Ooo.

The reason that we don’t see more of Party God is likely because his whole existence is centered around partying; he is constantly going to wherever the biggest party is at. This would probably get boring for viewers over time, but it would still be interesting if there’s more to him than this.

9 Overstayed: NEPTR

Audiences might feel guilty for disliking the well-meaning NEPTR, which stands for “Never Ending Pie Throwing Robot, but he feels more like a running joke than a character as time goes on.

Even Finn sees him as more of an appliance than his robotic son when he accidentally changes NEPTR into a microwave while under a curse that transforms those around him into how he truly sees them. Still, NEPTR’s enthusiasm to please Finn and partake in adventure is somewhat endearing.

8 Underused: Joshua

Although Finn’s biological father is Martin, it’s clear that Joshua was Finn’s dad in every sense of the word. Along with Finn Joshua is the father of Jake and his dog brother Jermaine; Joshua gave birth to Jake himself after getting bit by a shape-shifting monster. Joshua was a tough but loving father and he was known to hunt down demons and monsters alongside his wife.

There are only a couple of episodes that take place back when Joshua was alive. Most of the time he appears in memories and holograms as he and his wife Margaret passed away long before Adventure Time takes place.

7 Overstayed: Lumpy Space Princess

From the first time the audience is introduced to her, it’s clear that Lumpy Space Princess is a very dramatic and emotional character. At times she can even be obnoxious and self-centered. Voiced by the show’s creator Pendleton Ward, she is frequently present in the show and one of the princesses we see most often.

Most of the time LSP spends is on her own in the woods out of frustration with living with her parents. She isn’t recognized by the chair of princesses because of her bad attitude and in “Apple Wedding” she is also apparently known for crashing weddings. While we do see some small character development with LSP, overall she isn’t the most likable character.

6 Underused: Billy

Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

Finn always looked up to Billy as a role model and was the kind of hero he always aspired to be like. According to the Fandom Wiki, he was a humanoid warrior known for feats that included saving princesses, slaying monsters and even fighting a bear. He rode across the Land of Ooo on a motorcycle, often with his girlfriend Canyon by his side.

By the time Finn and Jake encounter Billy, he’s aged somewhat and has largely retired from fighting evil, turning to more non-violent means. He’s a shell of his former self until Finn and Jake give him a new appreciation for fighting evil. Soon after, however, Billy is tragically killed by The Litch.

5 Overstayed: Magic Man

Magic Man has got to be one of the peskiest and obnoxious characters in Adventure Time. While he has a tragic and interesting backstory, it becomes hard to sympathize with him when he is constantly causing unrestrained trouble in the Land of Ooo and Finn and Jake especially, after leaving his home planet of Mars in a state of complete chaos.

His antics are constant until he tricks gets Betty to fall for his trickery, which tragically results in him passing on his powers and madness to her.

4 Underused: Goliad

Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

Princess Bubblegum creates the mysterious, highly intelligent, and stoic Goliad from a lock of her hair so that one day she can over for her as ruler of Ooo. PB then instructs Finn and Jake to teach Goliad what it means to be a good and kind leader. Things quickly go south as Goliad begins to kinetically control the other candy children, which forces PB to create Stromo from a lock of Finn’s hair to stop her.

The two remain in a psychic deadlock from then on, and we don’t see much more of Goliad. Goliad does a good job of exposing Princess Bubblegum’s problematic traits, but it would have been cool to see more stand-alone action from this powerful creation.

3 Overstayed: Cinnamon Bun

Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

Cinnamon Bun is one of the more sappy and foolish of the residence of the Candy Kingdom. He’s extremely clumsy, unintelligent and childish in the earlier seasons of Adventure Time. Despite his childish and bumbling personality, he’s frequently assigned tasks by Princess Bubblegum and often appears in episodes that take place within the Candy Kingdom.

Cinnamon Bun’s character improves when he meets Flame Princess, and they stage a coup to overthrow her father. When they succeed Cinnamon Bun remains in the Fire Kingdom as a knight, a more mature candy person but still obnoxious at times.

2 Underused: Orgalorg

Adventure Time 5 Characters Who Were Criminally Underused (& 5 Who Overstayed Their Welcome)

Audiences were no doubt shocked when it was revealed that the sleeping spirit of a cosmic entity lived within Gunter. We see the troublemaking penguin pretty frequently throughout Adventure Time, but we only get a few glimpses of the all-powerful otherworldly “breaker of worlds” that was banished for trying to absorb the power of the catalyst comet.

Gunther’s backstory and true identity were a powerful revelation and it would have been interesting to expand on it more, but it also makes it more cryptic.

1 Overstayed: Tree Trunks

Tree Trunks is a character both liked and disliked by fans. For some, she’s endearing and funny, and for others, she is bizarre and annoying.

Polarizing as she is, Tree Trunks makes frequent appearances throughout Adventure Time and we learn more than enough about her personal life, including her several exes and her insatiable love for Mr. Pig and their adopted son, Sweet P. Some fans assert that they would appreciate Tree Trunks more in smaller doses.
