Adventure Time Together Again Is the Best Ending for Finn and Jakes Story

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Adventure Time: Distant Lands – Together Again, now streaming on HBO Max.

“Come Along With Me,” the original series finale to Adventure Time, was a great ending to the show. However, it wasn’t really an ending for the show’s main characters Finn and Jake. There were story arcs resolved (the war for the Candy Kingdom, Simon’s recovery, Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship) and sacrifices made (Fern, Betty, the tree fort), but in general, it was a “life goes on” ending where Finn and Jake were a relatively small piece of a bigger story.

Together Again, the third Adventure Time: Distant Lands special, and the one initially written as the last before HBO Max ordered the fourth special Wizard City, gives Finn and Jake’s adventures a definitive ending in a way “Come Along With Me” couldn’t — and it’s pretty much perfect. Together Again has been promoted as the duo’s “biggest adventure ever.” What the ads have kept secret is that the biggest adventure is death.

Finn’s Obsidian cameo showed he outlived Jake, evident by a large memorial tattoo for his brother and accompanied by Jake’s granddaughter Bronwyn. Fans had speculated Together Again would be the story of Jake’s death — it turns out it’s actually the story of Finn’s afterlife. The first scenes look like a flashback to Season 1, but it quickly grows twisted before turning out to be a simulation feeding an elderly Finn his happiest memories as he stands in the afterlife’s waiting room.

The circumstances of Finn and Jake’s deaths aren’t revealed and don’t matter (though Steve Wolfhard’s headcanon about Jake’s death is pretty great). What matters is that Finn is excited to be reunited with Jake once again. When it turns out Finn has been assigned to the 37th Deadworld while Jake is chilling in the elite 50th Deadworld, Finn will do anything he can to make it into the 50th, a real challenge given the prerequisite for entering is abandoning the desire to enter it.

Jake ends up sensing Finn’s energy and portals out of the 50th to find Finn. For a minute, it almost seems like the enlightened Jake is struggling to remember Finn, but, thankfully, he’s just joshing around and is glad to see him again. Back together, the two heroes get the epic heroic adventure they didn’t really have in “Come Along With Me.”

Both Finn and Jake are willing to sacrifice themselves in the battle against New Death to let the other reincarnate; Jake is enlightened and wants Finn to have the chances, but Finn does not want to live them without Jake. In the end, neither of the two has to sacrifice themselves. While they put up an awesome shape-shifting fight against New Death, it’s Mr. Fox who deals the killing blow and becomes the next Death. It turns out New Death’s evil plot to wipe out the cycle of life and death was all manipulated by The Lich. Jake can now destroy the severed hand that’s all that remains of Ooo’s most evil villain.

With balance restored, Finn is ready to move on to his next life. Jake starts to float back up to Nirvana but ultimately decides to return to Ooo with Finn just for the sake of spending some more time together. It’s an absolutely beautiful ending that brings so much happiness to the tragic and scary subject of death that it becomes tear-jerking. There’s still one more Distant Lands special after Together Again, and there might still be more Adventure Time in the future, but there will absolutely never be a better ending to Finn and Jake’s story.

Created by Pendleton Ward, Adventure Time: Distant Lands is available exclusively on HBO Max.
