AEW Game Shows Off Some Gameplay Footage While In Development

AEW Games has released a new gameplay trailer for the AEW Console Game showing off Jungle Boy, one third of the popular Jurassic Express trio. World Champion and avid gamer Kenny Omega announced the wrestling game late last year in a special presentation, also hosted by referee Audrey Hepburn, Women’s World Champion Britt Baker, and AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes. The game debuted alongside two mobile titles: AEW Elite General Manager and AEW Casino: Double or Nothing.

Much of the wrestling landscape has transformed since the debut trailer of the still-untitled AEW game. Championships have changed hands, including the AEW World Championship when Omega defeated Jon Moxley. Britt Baker clinched world title gold when she beat Hikaru Shida in a stellar match, and the in-ring return of CM Punk after a seven year hiatus pipe-bombed the wrestling world. Coupled with the AEW debuts of Christian Cage, Ruby Soho, Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson, All Elite Wrestling in particular has made headlines several times over. In contrast, news of the AEW video game has arrived sparingly. The AEW Games YouTube channel has released regular updates and events featuring their mobile titles, but the last bit of significant news on the console game arrived in late July. In an interview, Omega announced a full campaign, multiplayer and character creation for the AEW Game.

AEW Games has come out with a development update on its YouTube channel spotlighting Jungle Boy’s renders. As the video caption demonstrates, these renderings are not necessarily final as Japanese dev Yuke’s Co Ltd continues development. The video shows a slow rotation of Jungle Boy’s character model before putting him in the ring against former TNT Champion Darby Allin. Jungle Boy begins the match executing an arm drag from the top rope that sends Allin flying. The Jurassic Express member clotheslines his opponent in the next frame, then hits a few more moves before tapping out Allin in his signature Snare Trap submission maneuver. While this makes for Jungle Boy’s first in-game appearance, Darby Allin’s appearance is his second overall since Kenny Omega teased him in AEW gameplay and artwork two months ago.

Following the debuts of Punk, Cage, Soho, Cole and Danielson, AEW has a clear opportunity to create one of the most star-studded non-WWE wrestling games in recent memory. Outside of perhaps 2017’s Fire Pro Wrestling World, full-fledged recent wrestling games not included in the WWE 2K series have largely gone unnoticed. The recent AEW signings have brought considerable potential to AEW’s first game: one fans might remember as synonymous with major events in wrestling history. However, it remains unknown at this time what affect the signings will have on Kenny Omega’s comment that the AEW wrestling game could release next year. Recent events could lead to a delay of the game to implement these new characters. They could also have no affect whatsoever on the release date if Yuke’s Co Ltd and All Elite Wrestling decide to simply add the characters later in the form of DLC or free updates.

In any case, Jungle Boy’s debut trailer for the AEW Console Game spotlights a dextrous wrestler who looks fun to control. Gamers may have a chance to try him themselves if AEW and Yuke’s release a demo of the game before the release date, whenever it may fall. Until then, AEW will likely release new trailers periodically featuring other wrestlers on the game’s roster.
