After Life has become a much loved Netflix show, with two seasons already aired and a third due on 14th January 2022. Ricky Gervais is well known for creating a number of superb comedy shows, all laced with realism. One scene will cause tears and the next will be tears of laughter.

After Life seems to have taken the best elements from all of Gervais’ work and combined them to make the ultimate purposeful and heartfelt plotline. No character has been written in without cause. Every personality in After Life is interesting and distinctive, with plenty of quotes that sum up each of them.

Tony

“I Had The Best Marriage Imaginable … So When Lisa, My Wife, When She Died … Everyone Tried To Help Me And They Sort Of Saved Me. So I Wanted To Do Something Nice Back.”

Tony’s anguish becomes a defining feature of his demeanor, as the agony he feels engulfs his character, leaving little room for other people. However, his blunt and unforgiving portrayal isn’t the way he’s always been and small glimmers of his true personality are sporadically conveyed through the series.

He eventually recognizes the persistent help he received from his friends and chooses to save their workplace as a thank you. Upon meeting with Paul to prevent the closing of the Tambury Gazette in series 2, episode 4, he acknowledges the kindness he’s been shown as the reason to do something nice back, proving he does care about others but is just in pain.

Pat

“Don’t Big Me Up Too Much. She’ll Be Pretty Disappointed As It Is. If Anything, Downplay It.”

Arguably one of the best characters in After Life, the comically and aptly named postman Pat starts delivering the post to Tony’s house. Tony finds his approach to his job annoying, as he has no time for Pat’s nosiness.

Pat is resilient to Tony’s stream of insults in After Life, which only seems to draw him into wanting to be friends. Pat took a shining to Roxy having seen Tony with her and asked him to put a word in on his behalf in series 2, episode 2, but to also downplay his description. Pat’s lack of confidence is quite an endearing trait because he doesn’t need pity but just doesn’t want to get Roxy’s hopes up, as he perceives himself as a fairly disappointing person.

Lisa

“I Thought I’d Leave You A Little Guide To Life Without Me.”

After Life is a sincerely moving program and the portrayal of Lisa only adds to the emotion, At the time viewers meet Tony and the rest of the cast, Lisa has already passed away, so her scenes are only of pre-recorded videos and Tony’s memories. The opening of the first episode is of Lisa talking to her camera, knowing what her fate is.

Somehow, the fantastic scriptwriting gives viewers enough of an insight into her personality, feeling like the audience gets to know her just as much as the other characters. It’s evident that her love for Tony was so strong and even though she had to face up to what was to come, she still had the energy to put her husband first and consider what he will need after she’d gone.

Lenny

“No, He’s A Mate, It Distracts Him.”

When a loved one passes away, those who are grieving need solidarity and reliability from people around them and Tony is certainly not short of those people. Lenny’s equable temperament is a great benefit to Tony, as he turns into a bit of a human punch bag for his friend.

On one occasion in series 1, episode 1, Tony leaves the office, calling Lenny “fat boy,” which startles Sandy, but it doesn’t faze Lenny. For him, it’s as simple as being a good mate to Tony, so whatever he needs, he’ll put up with, in the hope that he will eventually get better.

Sandy

“You Can Still Be Happy.”

Being the new girl at the Tambury Gazette, Sandy is thrown in the deep end as she’s confronted with Tony’s struggles and the rest of her new colleagues’ interesting quirks. From the off, Matt lets her know that Tony isn’t quite himself, because of his grief.

Sandy sits back and is happy to observe Tony at work without wanting to be a nuisance, but her equanimity slips when she recognizes the sadness he feels. In series 1, episode 2, Sandy gets upset at the thought of the pain he’s in and wants him to find joy again. As a new colleague, she takes no offense to Tony’s disengagement, but instead, already feels the need to be supportive towards him, which continues thought out the series.

Psychiatrist

“Do That Then. Just Stop Feeling Sad.”

It’s no secret that a psychiatrist needs to be professional, calm, trustworthy and supportive. In other words, they require every trait that the psychiatrist from After Life doesn’t have, making him the worst in the business.

Tony and Matt are his patients, and in both cases, he is vulgar and inappropriate, and his moronic behavior only causes more distress. In series 1, episode 3, he answers Tony’s wish of no longer feeling sad by telling him to just stop it. It actually comes as no surprise, as his words epitomize the appalling, uninterested attitude that he gives off in every session.

Anne

“We’ve Got To Help Each Other Struggle Through Until We Die And Then We’re Done. No Point In Feeling Sorry For Ourselves And Making Everyone Else Unhappy.”

The misguided view that friendships should only be between people of around the same age is eliminated in After Life, mainly through the bond formed between Anne and Tony, whose friendship is of huge significance in both their lives. After meeting at the graves of their respective partners, they share life stories, with Anne imparting a great deal of wisdom.

Although losing her husband was a tragic loss for her, she sees the value in plowing on and helping others along the way. As one of the most likable characters in After Life, Anne’s whole presence is uplifting and full of hope, as she opts for no self-pity and a happy life.

Roxy

“Most People Are Alright. They’re Just Having A Bad Day. Sometimes They Don’t Think, They Get Caught Up In Their Own Lives. They’re Just Trying To Survive.”

The very mention of the words “sex worker” comes with a whole host of outdated, negative stereotypes and connotations, but Roxy’s benevolence shoots down any misconceptions.

Her friendship with Tony grew from his initial request of cleaning his kitchen sink, leading them to learn about one another. Roxy’s sagaciousness frequently comes into play, as she has acquired compassion towards others. In series 1, episode 4, she opposes Tony’s lack of faith in humanity by explaining how people are just trying to get by. Something she knew all too well from her friendship with Julian, a drug addicted man in pain.

Matt

“I Can Take All The Insults, The Lateness. Fill Your Boots With That Sh**, But If You Carry On Like This, People Are Going To Get Hurt …”

Brother-in-law and boss to Tony, Matt cuts him a lot of slack and remains forbearing as Tony loses all exuberance for his job. Matt tries his best to get Tony back on track, but his attempts are met with a refusal to make any effort.

After taking a hammer from two muggers, Tony used the tool to threaten a schoolboy who was bullying his nephew (Matt’s son,) George. In series 1, episode 5, Matt quickly susses that Tony is the culprit and his patience soon wears thin. The quote sums up his attitude towards what Tony’s going through, willing to put up with his dourness and unpunctuality, but his devotion to being a dad comes first and no one will jeopardize that.

Emma

“Hey, You Are Human.”

Emma is a nurse at a care home and by the very nature of her job, has great people skills, but she is also extremely dedicated and protective of the well-being of her elderly patients. Tony’s presence somewhat aggravates her at the start, as his negativity has an impact on his visits to his dad.

After delivering a few home truths to him, they strike up a mutual liking for one another, leading to Tony asking her out. When she agrees in the last episode of series 1, Tony wells up and thanks her, to which she responds with, ‘”Hey, you are human.” Even though Emma won’t suffer fools gladly, she sympathizes with the effects of Tony’s grief and, deep down, only wants to make him feel better, just as she does with her patients.
