AfterShock Comics Launches New YA Imprint Seismic Press

AfterShock Comics has announced the debut of a new Young Adult comic imprint, called Seismic Press, as well as the line’s debut offering, the canine fantasy Rainbow Bridge, by writers Steve Orlando and Steve Foxe and artist Valentina Brancati.

AfterShock Comics was founded in 2015 by founded by editors Joe Pruett, of Negative Burn and Mike Marts, who worked on both the Batman line of titles for DC and the X-Men for Marvel. The company’s offerings are wide-ranging, stretching across multiple genres, including superheroes and science fiction. In its short existence, the company has managed to attract an impressive array of talent, including Marguerite Bennett, Garth Ennis, and Cullen Bunn, among others. AfterShock has been recognized for its efforts, winning a Diamond Gem award in 2107 for Best New Publisher. Now, the company has announced their next step: a brand-new line of comics aimed at readers age 12-18.

Seismic Press’ first offering, Rainbow Bridge, is a fantasy adventure about a boy named Andy, whose beloved dog Rocket passes away right before Andy is to start high school. Grief-stricken, Andy visits Rocket’s grave and is whisked away to the Rainbow Bridge, an afterlife for pets. There, he joins Rocket on a mission to find Rocket’s lost littermate and finds the confidence he will need to navigate high school along the way. Future offerings will include books by the creators of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, as well as repackaged versions of existing AfterShock titles that fit within Seismic’s mission.

AfterShock Editor-in-Chief Mike Marts was enthusiastic about the line, feeling that it helps further AfterShock’s mission to defy reader’s expectations and “push them out of their comfort zone,” only this time it will be for young adults. The market for Young Adult graphic novels is huge, so AfterShock’s move into the arena is smart. The company has brought together top talent on their regular offerings, and the creators announced for Seismic Press are no different; in addition to noted comic book creators like Steve Orlando, the company is reaching out into the world of film and television for talent as well. Rainbow Bridge’s story of a boy and his recently deceased dog setting out on an adventure together is unlike anything else being offered right now. The book’s themes of losing a pet and finding yourself are universal, and many young adults can relate.

Since the company’s initial offerings over five years ago, AfterShock has expanded into a top-level publisher and now the company is taking the next step and diversifying its output. If the unique nature of Rainbow Bridge is an indication of the line’s direction, it will be a treat for young readers. Rainbow Bridge is expected to debut this August.
