Age of Empires 4 Every Civilization Available At Launch

2021’s Age of Empires 4 brings back the iconic franchise after nearly fifteen years off, and it’s bringing quite a few changes to the tried-and-true formula. Brand new features like an ambush system and wall-mounted units can integrally change the way players approach each match.

The newest title definitely takes more inspiration from Age of Empires 2, most obviously shown by the return to the medieval era. Age of Empires 4 also features fewer civilizations than usual, however, with a much bigger emphasis on asymmetrical gameplay.

Because of this, Age of Empires 4 will only feature eight different civilizations at launch. Each one has unique specializations and unique units that players will have to learn to use. Here are all eight civilizations that will be available to players when Age of Empires 4 releases later this year.

Age of Empires 4: Abbasid Dynasty

The Abbasid Dynasty is the first civilization that shows the modernization of Age of Empires’ series formula. In Age of Empires 4, it’s a highly adaptive civilization that uses the House of Wisdom to research a wide array of upgrades. When buildings are constructed around the House of Wisdom they provide a boost to the Golden Age, which in turn increases gathering, production, and research rates. Special units included unique camel cavalry and an inspirational community leader called Imam.

Age of Empires 4: Chinese

The Chinese are an often-used civilization in RTS games, and for good reason. China had one of the greatest empires ever seen in history, and that’s reflected in the way the civilization plays in Age of Empires 4. One of the most important bonuses the Chinese have are extra villagers at the start of a match, meaning they can get a head start on construction. In terms of units, the Chinese highly specialize in gunpowder, which gives them a larger focus on ranged combat than others civilizations. They also have a unique unit called The Imperial Official, which can collect extra gold from nearby buildings. Economic booms are definitely going to be the focus when playing as this civ in AoE 4.

Age of Empires 4: Delhi Sultunate

According to Age of Empires 4’s official site, the Delhi Sultanate is based on the empires formed from the invasion of the Ghurid Dynasty, spanning the years 879-1526 CE. This civilizations’ focus is almost entirely on technology and research, which in turn forms the basis for a strong defense.

Interestingly the Delhi Sultanate doesn’t use resources for research, but each piece of research takes more time than other civilizations. A unique unit called The Scholar can speed up research at nearby buildings. The Sultanate specializes in defense in Age of Empires 4, but late-game they can produce a massive army headed by deadly War Elephants.

Age of Empires 4: English

The English are an often-used civilization in both Age of Empires and the RTS genre in general. In Age of Empires 4, they have a major focus on defense, bolstered by their powerful archer units as well as a solid food economy. The biggest specialization for the English comes with castles, keeps, and towers as all of these buildings trigger an alarm when enemies near. This bumps up the attack speed of all buildings, bolstering defense even more.

Cheaper farms than other civilizations in Age of Empires 4 can also result in faster research and building of units, in comparison to others. The Longbowmen are probably the most important English unit, as they have longer range than almost any other ranged unit in the game. There’s also a host of improvements that can make Longbowmen even more useful.

Age of Empires 4: French

The French are another returning civilization announced during the Age of Empires 4 fan preview, and they’re all about speed and mounted units. Cavalry gets bonus damage with the French, and one of the special units is a heavily armored mounted unit called The Royal Knight. Interestingly the French also have strong ranged units, making hit and run tactics the way to go. To bolster this is the French’s Influence system, which reduces the cost of units from building close to the keep. Establishing a booming economy quickly will be vital to playing the French, as players will need it to keep their army thriving.

Age of Empires 4: Mongols

The Mongols’ biggest asset in Age of Empires 4 is that they can literally pick up and move their entire civilization, inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of the civilization from 1000-1500 CE. This provides a plethora of options for navigating around enemies, and players that can coordinate multiple groups of units will flourish as the Mongols.

As expected a lot of the Mongols bonuses revolve around offense, cavalry, and boosting movement speed. The Mongols also have the closest thing to a “hero” unit of any civilization, with the Khan. This powerful horse archer has a Signal Arrow ability that can boost the attack power of any nearby Mongol units. This will likely be one of the most difficult civilizations to learn in Age of Empires 4, but the Mongols’ ability to control the map is second to none.

Age of Empires 4: Holy Roman Empire

Microsoft hasn’t detailed anything about the last two Age of Empires 4 civilizations yet, but they have been confirmed as the Holy Roman Empire and the Rus. Although there aren’t any details about how the civilization will behave in-game available right now, the Holy Roman Empire will likely have a heavy focus on offense and military. The empire covered a large swathe of the world at the time, after all.

Age of Empires 4: Rus

Like the Holy Roman Empire, Microsoft won’t be showing more of Age of Empires 4’s Rus civilization until closer to launch. However, the civilization will focus on the empire formed where modern-day Russia is located, and it’s clear one of the game’s campaigns, called the Rise of Moscow, will focus on it as well.
