Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was Marvel’s first attempt to make a TV series that spun off its Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. The TV show brought in Agent Coulson from the movies and had an immediate hook, as Coulson died in The Avengers. It also crossed over with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

However, things started rough for Marvel here, and it looked like Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would die before it had a chance. The good news is that the show got better and better as it went on and was especially great once it moved past any inclination of playing in the same timeline of the movies. With seven seasons, S.H.I.E.L.D. went to the far ends of the universe and back.

7 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 (8.13)

The first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. struggled out of the gate for several reasons. It took Chloe Bennet a while to win fans over as the lead, Daisy, and the show seemed unable to find its feet and figure out what it wanted to be. It was both a tie-in series to the MCU and a show that tried to prove it could succeed on its own.

However, there was also a lot to like about the first season, including a promising cast, including Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May and Brett Dalton as Grant Ward. Once Ward turned evil, and Bill Paxton showed up, the show finished Season 1 strong.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 ended with the loss of Fitz, and the team realized that Coulson was dying, meaning the team was losing two of its best members. However, part of the team left Earth to find Fitz and try to save him, and what made things even more interesting was what was happening on Earth, with the team now led by Mac.

Agent Coulson was back, but this wasn’t the Phil Coulson that fans had grown to love. This man called himself Sarge, and he turned out to be a villain from the Fear Dimension that planned to take over the universe, but he ended up in a duplicate body of Coulson, causing confusion and devastation.

5 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 (8.51)

In Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2, the entire organization is rocked thanks to the Hydra infiltration from Season 1 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This gave the show a chance to rebound from the first season and distance itself from the movies. This allowed the second season to move much quicker and go much deeper into the Marvel Universe.

Season 2 started with Coulson rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. as its new director and then introduced the Inhumans, which led to that series getting one season order. However, the failure of Inhumans as a standalone show caused the two to only connect because there are Inhumans in both.

4 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 (8.58)

The third season of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued the Inhumans storyline as Coulson and Daisy searched for more Inhumans, only to learn that a new group called the ATCU was also after the Inhumans, with orders to detain them. However, there was also a lot of character development this season.

Simmons disappeared in Season 2, and Fitz was obsessed with finding out what happened to her this season. There was a battle with former member Grant Ward possessed by Hive, and there was also the addition of the Watchdogs, which critics praised for its parallels to real-world events at the time.

3 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 (8.61)

The final season of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. was praised by critics, and Agent Coulson and his team ended up swept back in time. They ended up sent to New York City in 1931, and despite the time travel aspects, the series was able to tie up all loose ends and finish the show properly.

The best parts were playing out the show based on where in time they ended up, with different genre styles in the 1930s (Noir), 1950s (Sci-Fi), 1970s, and 1980s, with that final era paying homage to movies like Back to the Future. Critics said it was a victory lap for the series to finish off its run.

2 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 (8.65)

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 saw the team escaped from the Mainframe. Having defeated Aida with Ghost Rider’s help, they were ready to get back to work. That didn’t happen, and this season went where no one expected. A mysterious person froze the team and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents woke up in space, aboard a spaceship, minus Fitz.

The team is not only in outer space, but they are also in the future year of 2091, the Earth destroyed, and humanity enslaved by the Kree. They face this future and have to survive it before heading back to their regular time and have to find a way to stop this dystopian future from happening.

1 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 (8.68)

Season 4 of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. saw the arrival of none other than Ghost Rider, making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. This version of Ghost Rider was Robbie Reyes, the current Ghost Rider in Marvel Comics. This season also allowed S.H.I.E.L.D. to operate in the open, thanks to the Sokovia Accords. Still, the team needed to reconfigure itself, and a new director is needed to keep Coulson’s survival a secret.

The other big storyline from the season saw S.H.I.E.L.D. hunting down Daisy, who went rogue. The Watchdogs from Season 3 also grew in power this season and gained political influence. One of the best moments came when Fitz helped create the Framework, and the team ended up sent into an alternate Earth where Hydra reigns supreme.
