[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 ahead.]

ABC and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has start its third season out strong on the whole (read our most recent episode review), with Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) having agreed to align his forces with those of Rosalind Price (Constance Zimmer) – the head of a government organization known as the Advanced Threat Containment Unit or ATCU – in order to deal with the growing Inhumans situation.

It looks as though that’s a smart move, as the extremely powerful (and extremely un-ordinary looking) Inhuman Lash – played by former NFL star Matthew Willig – will soon rear his head again, after he crossed paths with Lincoln (Luke Mitchell), Daisy (Chloe Bennet), and Mack (Henry Simmons) during the S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 premiere episode. You can watch a clip from said upcoming episode, titled “Devils You Know” above – showing Daisy and Mack on the hunt for the mysterious Lash.

Lash, in the Marvel Comics Universe, was born in the Inhuman city of Orollan (located in Greenland) and received the “gift” of Terrigenesis – leading him to undertake a mission to find other Inhumans whose powers had been activated by other means, in order to judge whether or not they are worthy of their newfound abilities. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 synopsis teases that Lash is “a monstrous Inhuman whose loyalties remain ambiguous,” so it remains to be seen how much his comics backstory is revised for the TV series. After all, Skye/Daisy’s origins were significantly revised for the TV show, so Lash may end up having a similarly strikingly different history than that for his comic book counterpart.

Access Hollywood has released the following high-res images of Willig as Lash, along with this quote about the character from S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeff Bell:

“Lash was an Inhuman out of the comic books, [a] big, unusual looking dude, who seems to be angry about something. [We’ll] find out over time [why].”

There are certain plot threads on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 that have yet to pick up full speed – specifically, May (Ming-Na Wen) and Hunter’s (Nick Blood) mission to infiltrate Hydra and take down its newest leader, Grant Ward (Brett Dalton). Fortunately, the other narrative threads involving characters like Coulson and Daisy have more than made up the difference, in the meantime. In addition, Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) is now on the mend and is determined to uncover more information regarding the alien world that the Kree stone transported her to at the end of the season 2 finale – whatever and wherever that dangerous planet may be.

It thus remains to be seen 1) How many of the aforementioned developments will connect directly to Lash and his own personal quest, and 2) Whether or not Lash will serve as a season-long antagonist for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and their (for now) allies in the episodes ahead. At the least, Lash should provide a satisfactory threat for Daisy and Co. to do battle with in the show’s immediate next episode.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 continues with “Devils You Know” this Tuesday at 9 p.m. on ABC. Agent Carter season 2 will air during the mid-season break in early 2016.
