Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Coulsons New Superpowers Explained

Agent Coulson is back in Agents of SHIELD season 7 as a Life Model Decoy – and that means this restored “Coulson” effectively has superpowers. Phil Coulson was the ultimate superhero fanboy, and one of the key moments of his life was meeting Captain America. Unfortunately he was killed by Loki in The Avengers before he ever got his trading cards signed by the living legend of World War II.

Resurrected by Kree science, Coulson was appointed as director of SHIELD by Nick Fury. He presided over SHIELD during a time when superheroes became far more common, and worked alongside powerhouses like Quake, Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider, and Deathlok. Coulson even became a cyborg, his left hand replaced with cybernetic technology innovated by Fitz, and it didn’t take Fitz long to install advanced tech such as holo-shield projectors in that hand. In the end, Coulson struck a deal with the devil that cost him his resurrected life.

He’s back after a fashion in Agents of SHIELD season 7, his mental engrams uploaded into a Life Model Decoy. This is an exact physical replica of Phil Coulson, but it swiftly demonstrated a lot of improvements. Fitz and Simmons had constructed the Coulson LMD using advanced Chronicom science, and they appear to have constructed it out of metals that can take a serious beating. Coulson took a gunshot to the shoulder without any apparent discomfort. Later, during a physical brawl with Chronicoms, his punches carried enough force to leave an imprint on metal. It’s clear this Coulson LMD has superhuman strength and resistance to injury, and potentially enhanced speed and reflexes as well.

The Agents of SHIELD season 7 premiere also suggested Coulson has other abilities, though. The LMD was able to navigate a lifetime’s worth of memories in an instant, recognizing the Swordfish logo and linking it to SHIELD records he’d read decades ago. It suggests the LMD’s memories are more efficiently organized than a human’s, essentially meaning the new Coulson has something of a photographic memory. Couple this with Coulson’s natural intelligence and deductive instincts, and Coulson LMD will be a real asset when it comes to figuring out what the Chronicoms are up to.

It’s reasonable to assume Coulson has other abilities associated with LMDs and Chronicoms as well, although these are yet to be demonstrated. In Agents of SHIELD season 4, Aida – the prototype LMD – possessed enhanced senses including the ability to see things through x-rays. And the Chronicoms, a cybernetic race, appeared to possess an innate bond with advanced technology. That may well mean Coulson LMD will be extremely useful when it comes to interfacing with Chronicom tech.
