AHS Roanoke Nurse Sisters True Crime Story Explained

In season 6, episode 4, “Chapter 4”, Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series, American Horror Story, introduced a dynamic duo of murderous nurses whose crimes actually took place in real-life. Roanoke is a mockumentary styled retelling of the events that occurred at a Roanoke, North Carolina home which has been cursed by the missing colony. Murphy is known for including significant historical events and figures since season 1 premiered in 2011. With each true story more gruesome than the next, the crimes attached to the nurses in AHS: Roanoke is perhaps one of the most horrifying.

The beginning of the season introduces series regulars Sarah Paulson (Shelby Miller, Audrey Tindall, and Lana Winters), Lily Rabe (Shelby Miller), Evan Peters (Edward Philipe Mott and Rory Monahan), and Angela Bassett (Lee Harris and Monet Tumusiime). The plot centers around Shelby and Matt Miller, who have decided to purchase and renovate an old farm house in Roanoke, North Carolina which has been vacant for years. As they begin to settle in, horrific events start to take place and threaten their lives. That is when the murders committed by Miranda Jane and Bridget Jane’s are revealed by Dr. Cunningham (Denis O’Hare).

According to Dr. Cunningham, the nurses opened up a hospice care center in the old farm house. They decided they would utilize the setting to fulfill their desire to kill by murdering patients. Their ultimate goal was to kill patients whose first letter of their name would spell out the word “murder”. Ryan Murphy has a masterful ability to create unique stories, but the nurses’ story is entirely from the true crimes that were committed by Catherine May Wood and Gwendolyn Gail Graham in the 1980s.

The Nursing Home Murders Of The 1980s

During the 1980s, Catherine May Wood and Gwendolyn Gail Graham were in their mid-20s and worked as aides at the Alpine Manor Nursing Home in Michigan. They were arrested in 1988 for the deaths of two patients whose names started with the letter “M” and “E”. When their hearings started, they were on trial for only two of their murders; six others were still under investigation at the time. Instead of shooting their victims like the nurses in AHS: Roanoke, they smothered them to death. They also were not sisters; they were actually lovers committing crimes that they felt spoke to their love. In 1989, they were finally convicted.

Catherine May Wood was sentenced to 20-40 years in prison with the possibility of being eligible for parole in 2005. However, it is reported that she is now expected for release in 2021. Gwendolyn Gail Graham was considered the mastermind behind the crimes committed by the duo, and was given a total of five life sentences without the possibility for parole. Some argue that Wood was actually the mastermind, not Graham. Furthermore, it is assumed that the pact between the two lovers went awry when it was discovered that one of them was having an affair.

Their crimes were not only featured on Ryan Murphy’s popular television series, but also were depicted in Snapped: Killer Couples. The case has received an abundance of attention in modern years since their fictional counterparts were portrayed in American Horror Story: Roanoke.
