A new service replaces Apple AirPods that are suffering from reduced battery capacity with ones that have had their battery replaced, as well as been fully cleaned and sanitized. AirPods batteries are widely reported to only last for around 18 months. Not only can this mean replacing the AirPods themselves or their batteries at significant expense through Apple, it can also mean contributing to the growing problem of e-waste.

Unless users are paying for an AppleCare plan that covers AirPods, Apple lists AirPods battery servicing as $49 per earbud. If the reported estimates are broadly right, that means paying an additional $100 every 18 months for new batteries on top of the initial cost of AirPods. Many people, of course, may simply pay for a new set when an existing set begins to falter, which is even more costly, not to mention wasteful.

It’s these issues that Podswap has been set up to tackle. The company claims to provide the “first-ever battery replacement program” for AirPods and says it was set up after “our AirPods went from five hours of battery time to twenty minutes.” It notes that over 100 million AirPods have been sold to date and that they are very difficult to recycle. With that in mind, users can arrange to swap a pair of flagging first-generation or second-generation AirPods for a revamped pair. It’s also possible to send in a single AirPod for a fresh pair, and to donate old AirPods that are no longer used. The service costs $60 if swapping a pair or $90 if swapping a single AirPod for a pair.

How To Get Replacement AirPods

Podswap provides a way for users to test their AirPods battery health before choosing whether to use the service. It advises they should charge the earbuds to 100 percent and then play music through them at 65 percent volume continuously for five minutes. It advises that a 2-3 percent drop in charge means the battery health remains good, a 5-10 percent drop is average, and a drop of greater than 15 percent is bad.

With that in mind, should users decide they want replacements, they can then tap to ‘Swap Now’ on the website and select whether they will be sending first-generation or second-generation AirPods. Podswap will then send out a replacement set, with users instructed to return theirs in the same box using the prepaid label provided. They should be returned within five business days to avoid additional fees. Podswap also notes that, while the battery life of the newly-received AirPods will be “good as new,” the units may have scuffs or cosmetic damage given that they are recycled.
