The skilled players in Alice in Borderland have shown that despite their difficult situation, some of the best characters can still prove to be charming individuals. From helping others find hope again to sacrificing their lives for others, there’s no shortage of selfless acts from the most likable characters on the show.
Aside from their selflessness, fans have grown to like these players because of their personalities. They can find humor in the darkest circumstances and often make sure that they’re loyal to and can support their closest friends in the series.
10 Takeru Danma (Hatter)
Hatter’s egoistic goals and manipulative skills have revealed him as one of the most intelligent characters in Alice in Borderland. He brilliantly crafts a fake story about how collecting all the cards could lead to freedom for at least one of them.
Aguni would agree that his best friend has lost his way throughout the years, however, as Hatter predictably becomes obsessed with maintaining his reputation and loyal following. He gives false hope to others and sees people as tools he can use to collect more cards. Audiences likely weren’t upset at all about his death. It’s the ending he deserves for all his bad deeds and his final attempt at murdering his closest ally.
9 Saori Shibuki
Shibuki is introduced as a shady character from the get-go. She encounters Arisu and his friends during their first game and obviously knows what’s going on. She doesn’t care enough to share any details, though, as she’s only concerned about her own life.
When she realizes that she can use Arisu’s gang to survive games, she tries to cause a rift between them instead of trusting them. She manipulates Chōta in an effort to turn him away from his friends. While she does share a few moving moments with Arisu on the balcony and with Chōta in the “Hide-and-seek” game, these don’t do much to make up for all the trouble she causes.
8 Aguni Morizono
If Aguni hadn’t given up his role as a villain to become a hero during the last few minutes of his life, he wouldn’t be as likable as he currently is. As Hatter’s right-hand man, he’s responsible for maintaining order in the Beach through violence.
Aguni can be rash and heartless, which is especially seen during the “Witch Hunt” game. That said, his brutal actions during this round were a direct result of the pain he felt after killing his best friend Hatter in self-defense. When Arisu helps him realize this, Aguni sacrifices his life to save the young player and everyone else in the room. While his redemption arc doesn’t excuse his heinous deeds, he at least remembers what matters the most in the end.
7 Chōta Segawa
When fans first meet Chōta, he seems like he might be the funny supporting TV character for the show. However, his backstory is much darker than anyone expected. The trauma he experienced with his family and their cult has stuck with him and it’s something he carries to the deadly competition. Because of his insecurity and internal conflict, he’s easily manipulated by Shibuki and almost causes a rift between him and his friends. While he can’t be blamed for her actions, it’s disappointing to see him choose a complete stranger over Arisu and Karube.
He thankfully reminds fans that he’s a likable character when, like Karube, he spends the last few moments in “Hide-and-seek” reminiscing about their friendship and accepting that he should sacrifice his life for Arisu.
6 Shuntarō Chishiya
Chishiya’s carefree attitude and striking appearance almost immediately make him seem like a mysterious but important character in the series. He has shown that he can be an incredibly smart player both inside and outside of the games.
Chishiya sees the bigger picture and works towards getting out of the twisted contest instead of simply surviving on a daily basis. He’s not afraid of doing whatever it takes to achieve this goal, even if it means hurting innocent people like Arisu in the process. Most fans would likely be on the fence about whether this character is likable or not, as his intentions and motivations may go either way.
5 Ann Rizuna
Despite being a side character on the show, Ann has demonstrated that she’s more than an arrogant executive of the Beach. She may have a tough exterior, but she likely cares more about others than she would ever admit.
Fans see how resourceful she can be when she draws from her forensic knowledge to use household tools while solving the murder in the “Witch Hunt.” She’s determined to stop the senseless murders around her. Until she shows that these good intentions extend beyond her need for self-preservation, though, fans will likely remain wary about what she might do in the future.
4 Hikari Kuina
Alice in Borderland is one of the increasing number of great shows with LGBTQ+ representation. The series highlights Kuina’s story arc in the best way, showing fans how much adversity she has had to overcome because of her gender identity. She brings these life lessons with her to the brutal competition and her kindheartedness often shines through during the most crucial times.
Despite acting as Chishiya’s sidekick for his callous plan of using Arisu to access Hatter’s cards, Kuina voices out how uncomfortable she is about the idea of leaving him behind. She also stays behind to fight The Last Boss to save Ann’s life. The only drawback with her character is that fans don’t see nearly enough of her on the show, which is something that will hopefully change in future seasons.
3 Yuzuha Usagi
Usagi has shown that she’s more than just a strong and athletic competitor on the show. She’s also a compassionate person who would go out of her way to help others. One of her first good deeds happens in the game of “Tag” when she agrees to help Arisu clear the game.
The scene that proves Usagi is genuinely kindhearted is when she chooses to help Arisu outside of a game. She convinces him to keep going, even if it feels like all hope is lost. Without her kind words and support, the protagonist might have never been able to pick himself back up. She has been a loyal and valuable companion since then and is always willing to go above and beyond to help Arisu survive.
2 Daikichi Karube
Karube is one of those people that are just immediately likable. His sense of humor, carefreeness, and fierce loyalty to his friends have made him a fan favorite. He always has Arisu and Chōta’s backs, just like they have his.
Karube also has a surprising level of maturity behind his childish façade. Some fans may recall how he expresses genuine concern for Arisu’s future in the very first episode of the show. He knows that his friend has more potential than him, which is also why he chooses to sacrifice himself in one of the most difficult games in Alice in Borderland. His heartbreaking and shocking death is something that stays with viewers long after they’re done watching that episode.
1 Ryōhei Arisu
It’s not surprising that the protagonist of the popular survival series is also the most likable player. He’s introduced as a relatable character who can’t live up to his family’s standards and chooses to take comfort in his friendship with Karube and Chōta.
Arisu has proven over and over again that he’s the smartest player in the competition. He uses his intelligence not just to save himself, but to ensure that those around him make it out alive as well. This is especially evident when he desperately tries to stop the “Witch Hunt” game by solving it as quickly as possible. What’s more, his goal isn’t simply to find a way to escape the contest, as he’s determined to end it once and for all by finding and defeating the gamemasters. In both small and big ways, he’s always looking out for others instead of only thinking about himself.
