Alice In Wonderland 2 Easter Egg Revealed The Fate Of Crispin Glovers Villain

Crispin Glover’s villain was noticeably absent from Alice Through The Looking Glass (aka Alice In Wonderland 2) but a sneaky Easter egg revealed his grisly fate. Loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s famous Alice novels, Alice In Wonderland was directed by Tim Burton and released in 2010. Starring Mia Wasikowska as the titular character, the box office smash also boasted big-name stars like Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway – as the Mad Hatter, Red Queen, and White Queen, respectively – among its cast.

While many critics felt Burton’s interpretation of the Lewis Carroll classics was a tad muddled, they were in agreement that Crispin Glover’s villainous turn as Ilosovic Stayne – aka the Knave of Hearts – was a highlight of the movie. The notoriously eccentric actor was perfectly cast as the Red Queen’s duplicitous henchman – a rather slimy character who was happy to side with the Queen when it suited him, but betrayed her at the end of Alice In Wonderland when he tried to kill her after they’d been captured by the White Queen and exiled for their tyranny.

Unfortunately, Crispin Glover didn’t return for the Alice In Wonderland sequel, but an Easter egg offered a few clues to his fate. Towards the end of Alice Through The Looking Glass, Alice and her pals head to the Red Queen’s castle where they are captured. There’s a brief glimpse of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) chained to a throne and next to him is a skeleton whose cause of death was quite obviously the sword plunged into his heart.

Looking more closely at the skeleton, it’s clearly what’s left of the Knave of Hearts. He has the same armor, the same hairstyle and the Knave’s signature heart-shaped eyepatch. It seems that some time after trying to kill the Red Queen at the end of Alice In Wonderland, she took her revenge by stabbing him through the heart which – considering his previous attempt on her life – was kind of understandable.

Crispin Glover expressed interest in returning for Alice Through The Looking Glass, so why his character was left out is a mystery. One thing is for sure, though: it’s lucky director James Bobin didn’t make what was left of the Knave of Hearts look too much like Glover. After the whole Back To The Future II recasting debacle that saw Glover sue Robert Zemeckis after he was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman, Alice Through The Looking Glass could’ve found itself on the receiving end of a lawsuit.
