Alien Confirms AI is As Much of A Threat as Xenomorphs

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Alien #7

Artificial intelligence has always played a sinister role in the Alien mythos, from the very first film with Ash trying to sacrifice the crew to preserve a living Xenomorph to David literally creating his version of the alien beast in Alien Covenant. In the current Marvel Comics Alien series, synthetics are no better than they are in the films. In the last story arc, the synthetic Iris was on a mission to use the Xenomorphs to destroy all organic life in the universe, giving fans a firsthand look at the potential threat that the androids pose. In the first issue of the latest arc in the series, a group of people have dedicated their lives to escaping such a threat, though in the end it may not do them any good.

In Alien #7 by Philip Kennedy Johnson with art by Salvador Larroca and Guru-eFX, fans are introduced to an interplanetary colony like they’ve never seen before in the Alien series. A religious group has colonized a distant moon after they use advanced technology to terraform their new home. Reluctant to use the tech to reach this end, they decide it is a necessary sin to escape the artificially evolved world Earth has evidently become. Just as the terraform is complete and they no longer need the machines to run to maintain life on their world, a ship crash lands on the moon, holding a number of vicious Xenomorphs inside.

Before the Xenomorphs arrive to rain on their parade, the religious colonizers known as Spinners hold a celebratory gathering to commemorate unlatching themselves from the machines that have kept them alive since they arrived on the moon. In a speech made by their leader, he speaks on the perceived unholiness of artificial intelligence and the righteousness of turning away from such a perversion. Marvel makes it clear that these people have actively fled the world of their birth out of fear, not of Xenomorphs, but of synthetics, and from the examples shown thus far they may have a right to be afraid.

Other than Bishop, who has been shown in multiple forms of media as an ally, Walter from Alien: Covenant, and Call from Alien: Resurrection, synthetics have consistently been villains throughout the Alien saga. As previously mentioned, the latest example came in the first six issues of Alien when the android Iris infiltrates a human freedom fighters group in an effort to hijack a Weyland-Yutani orbiting laboratory and spread the Xenomorph infection across the Earth, effectively eliminating all of humanity. Iris proves to be something of a daughter to David from Alien: Covenant, who sees humans only as a means for creation but also as something that is vile and imperfect.

Synthetics have been portrayed as evil multiple times when they break free from control and begin to think for themselves as shown in David and Iris, but they have also been just as deadly when under direct control of humans. Ash from the original Alien film is not autonomous, but under specific orders to bring a Xenomorph back to Earth without any regard for the crew’s safety. By the end of his time in the film, Ash even tries to kill Ripley to preserve the alien specimen. While A.I. is threatening, the real threat may lie behind the mechanical face of the ruthless company that persistently pursues the darkest corners of the universe for its own gain. Weyland-Yutani, either directly or otherwise, is the ultimate evil of the entire Alien mythos, and it is because of the company that artificial intelligence has become as much of a threat as Xenomorphs.
