Alien Why The Movies Can Be Successful Without The Xenomorph

The Alien movie franchise can be successful without the Xenomorph, despite the fact that audiences crave stories featuring the iconic creature perhaps more than ever. Ridley Scott himself has acknowledged that fans of the series want more of the Xenomorph, not less. The series’ first prequel, Prometheus, was widely condemned for omitting the gruesomely lovable endoparasite, which is what ultimately forced the Xenomorph back into the story in Alien: Covenant. However, considering that in Alien: Covenant, the true first Xenomorph in the franchise’s timeline didn’t show up until the third act, both of the prequels are sufficient evidence for the argument that the movies can most definitely be successful without the acid-blooded extraterrestrial.

There is no doubt that the appeal of the Xenomorph has not waned over the years, and most likely, the creature will return in future movies. However, if the somewhat less-than-successful Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection entries into the franchise are any indication of the limits of what the Xenomorph can provide in terms of narrative, then it is safe to assume that the better choice for the series would be to omit the titular alien in future movies. This is clearly not because the Xenomorph is an ineffective monster or villain; instead it is because there are only so many times any story can be regurgitated.

In Scott’s original Alien movie, the story was about isolation, invasion, and the unknown. In Aliens, the widely adored sequel by James Cameron, the story evolved into a clash of two species at their violent best—the Xenomorphs with a fully established hive against the best space soldiers humanity had to offer. Alien 3 was basically a regurgitation of both of these stories, with some minor nuanced additions like the heroine, Ripley, being impregnated with a Xenomorph Queen, and the Dog Alien. Alien Resurrection, despite its title, was more a eulogy for the franchise and a warning about where not to go with the characters. Ultimately, the Xenomorph as a character was stretched too thin and became a parody of itself. None of this means that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection didn’t have their merits as sci-fi horror movies.

Instead, it means that every character, Xenomorph or not, has its limits, and there is always the danger of overdoing it. This is precisely why the prequels had to be made, at least in Scott’s eyes as the creature’s creator. A drastically new story needed to be told, and that’s exactly what was provided in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant—an exploration of the other characters involved in the story of the Xenomorph. The Alien universe will always have the Xenomorph available when it is most needed, but given the trajectory of the story established in Alien: Covenant, the possibilities for new stories are endless.

Alien: Covenant’s android David, who was shown to be the creator of the Xenomorph, has the ability to continue his experiments using the vast resources of the Covenant colony ship. He has an ample supply of test subjects and there is no reason to believe that his curiosity and obsession with creating life would end with the Xenomorph. If each of the possible 2000-plus human hosts aboard the Covenant represent an opportunity to invent a new alien creature, then there is no reason to limit the series to a single, albeit highly effective, alien antagonist in the Xenomorph. Furthermore, the character David himself—or someone like him—is a superb villain and one who could take the lead as the Alien series’ main villain in place of the Xenomorph.
