In addition to the many upcoming Marvel TV shows on the horizon, Marvel Studios has 14 upcoming MCU movies after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as well. After Avengers: Endgame, it was unclear where exactly the franchise would go next, though everyone knew the following stories would require time to deal with the fallout of Endgame’s events, including the return of half of all life in the universe. Much of that has been the focus of Disney+ series like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The next MCU series to release will be Loki, which will also build upon Endgame’s story, particularly following the version of Loki who disappeared after the Battle of New York. But on the film side, there will be a different continuation – and a different story to focus on. The first movie coming out in Phase 4 is Black Widow, which was originally supposed to hit theaters in May 2020 before being delayed numerous times. After that, viewers will get to see new heroes join the big screen again, with Shang-Chi and the Eternals joining the fold. Then, fans will have some familiar faces again in theaters.

With four movies releasing in 2021 and five movies in 2022, the MCU is looking packed; all of next year’s films will focus on sequels, a first for the franchise since Phase 1. Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ant-Man are all getting sequels to their previous standalone stories, beginning with Stephen Strange and ending with Scott Lang. However, there’s more on the way too, and those films make the MCU’s future very exciting.

Black Widow – July 9, 2021

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Originally meant to launch the MCU’s Phase 4 last year, Black Widow was hit with delay after delay due to the ongoing pandemic. And while theaters are opening in droves across the United States and the world, there’s still a risk in putting the prequel story out in theaters only. So Disney has opted for a hybrid release; Black Widow will debut in theaters and on Disney+ as part of the service’s Premier Access initiative, which costs an additional $30 on top of the current subscription price.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and stars Scarlet Johannsson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, who at this point in the MCU timeline is on the run from the U.S. government. Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and it sees her return to Russia to reunite with her family and face off against the villain Taskmaster, whose identity still remains a mystery.

Florence Pugh co-stars as Yelena Belova, the next Black Widow in the MCU who will also reprise her role in Disney+’s Hawkeye series. Alongside her is David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka the Red Guardian (Russia’s version of Captain America), Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff (another Black Widow), O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, Ray Winstone as Dreykov, and William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross. Reports indicate Robert Downey Jr. will cameo as Tony Stark, but that remains to be seen.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – September 3, 2021

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

It’s been a long and arduous journey getting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made. Various studios, writers, and directors have tried their hand at adapting the martial arts character onto the big screen, but it wasn’t until recently that it finally got underway. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Simu Liu as the titular Shang-Chi, the film introduces one of the best fighters from Marvel Comics while also bringing back one of the first villain organizations in the MCU: the Ten Rings. They appeared in Iron Man and Iron Man 3, but instead of having a fictitious leader at the forefront, this time Marvel is including the real Mandarin, named Wenwu.

Tony Leung stars as the Mandarin, with Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist, and more, including an unknown actor as the villain Death Dealer. The first trailer for Shang-Chi finally released in April 2021 and it showcased a slightly different storyline from the comics. In this story, Shang-Chi is the Mandarin’s son, but there’s still the notion of him fighting his destiny to take over the villain organization. How it all plays out remains to be seen, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will feel fresh for fans who are perhaps jaded with all the sorcerers, aliens, and gods in the franchise.

Eternals – November 5, 2021

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Most upcoming Marvel movies, including ones on new heroes, are familiar enough to fit into the Marvel formula, but Eternals is the one film that could break the mold. It’s not just a fantastical film, but it’s filled with its own super-team that could easily rival the Avengers, if not overpower them entirely. Seeing that team’s origin, as well as where they’ve been for thousands of years (the Eternals are an immortal alien race, after all), is what makes Eternals one of the most exciting superhero movies on the horizon. Plus it’s directed by Chloe Zhao, who made a major name for herself by directing the Oscar-nominated film Nomadland in 2020.

To cap off the film’s intrigue, Eternals has one of the most star-studded casts of any MCU film. It stars Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Black Knight, Barry Keoghan as Druig, and Lia McHugh as Sprite. A big part of Phase 4 is going to be the cosmic universe, and Eternals is the natural first step into exploring that side of the MCU a bit more, following in the footsteps as Guardians of the Galaxy in Phase 2.

Spider-Man: No Way Home – December 17, 2021

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

The third film in the new Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland, Spider-Man: No Way Home ties together the previous web-slinger movies with a story that is shaping up to be a live-action version of Spider-Verse. Holland’s Peter Parker will come face to face with villains such as Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, with reports suggesting that the Peter Parkers of those universes – Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield – will return as well alongside several other characters. And this will all be thanks to the burgeoning multiverse Marvel is exploring in Phase 4.

Holland will, of course, be back as Peter, and so will his friends, Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya). But not only will the movie dive into the multiverse, it will have to resolve two of the biggest twists from Spider-Man: Far From Home – Peter’s identity being revealed to the world and him being framed for Mysterio’s “murder”. No Way Home can’t gloss past both of those plot points in order to get to the crux of the movie, which is the returning characters from the multiverse. And while No Way Home is a Sony movie that exists roughly as a standalone within the MCU, it will tie directly into Doctor Strange 2, especially considering Doctor Strange is supposed to appear in the movie in some capacity.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – March 25, 2022

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Funnily enough, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is being directed by Sam Raimi, who helmed the original Spider-Man trilogy for Sony Pictures. Not only is he getting a second go-around at directing a Marvel property but he’s also shaping that story by building off another Spider-Man film – No Way Home. The gap between the MCU’s two Doctor Strange movies is one of the biggest in the franchise thus far, with the sequel coming six years after the first installment. But in that time, Doctor Strange himself has been instrumental in the shared universe, helping push the Avengers down a the path they needed to ultimately defeat Thanos and save the universe. Now he’s finally getting a standalone sequel of his own, though exactly what that story will entail is currently unknown.

Benedict Cumberbatch, of course, will return as Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which he may finally become the universe’s new Sorcerer Supreme. Joining him is Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, whose story will build off the events of WandaVision. Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all reprise their roles as Wong, Christine Palmer, and Mordo in the sequel, with Xochitl Gomez making her MCU debut as the superhero America Chavez. Currently, the story for the sequel remains unknown, but it will undoubtedly explore the multiverse in greater detail, thus making it the most important movie in MCU Phase 4.

Thor: Love & Thunder – May 6, 2022

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Thor: Ragnarok remarkably reinvented Thor in the MCU, and his new characterization as well as his newfound popularity carried over into Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. So it wasn’t surprising to see Marvel greenlight a fourth film, titled Thor: Love & Thunder. Taika Waititi returns to write and direct the sequel that also brings back Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, who is set to pick up Mjolnir and become Mighty Thor. In the comics, Jane Foster eventually becomes a version of Thor, which is a concept Marvel is looking to dive into, though it’s unclear how far they will go – if Jane will replace Thor or merely be a one-off character as Mighty Thor.

But she’s not the only person coming back in Thor: Love & Thunder; Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, and Waititi are reprising their roles from Ragnarok, with Jaimie Alexander making her long-awaited return to the MCU as Sif. Furthermore, the Guardians of the Galaxy will also join Thor in his new adventure, building off their ending in Endgame. As for the villain, that role will be filled by Christian Bale, who’s playing Gorr the God Butcher – a character whose entire purpose in the story is quite literally to kill gods like Thor. As if being a Ragnarok sequel wasn’t exciting enough, Thor: Love & Thunder has so much going for it in terms of character development, star power, and universe expansion, which is why it was given a prime May release slot.

Black Panther 2 – July 8, 2022

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Easily one of the biggest blockbusters coming in 2022 is Black Panther 2. The first film from Ryan Coogler broke all kinds of records and 2018, and fans are eager to see what’s happening in Wakanda after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Sadly, Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 and, therefore, won’t be appearing in the film since production hadn’t begun yet. The good thing is, Marvel has affirmed they won’t recast the role of T’Challa for the sequel, but since Black Panther is a mantle that can be passed on to (or won by) another person, someone else may become the next Black Panther in the sequel; it could even be T’Challa’s sister, Shuri.

Even though Boseman tragically died, Marvel and Disney are committed to further developing the world of Wakanda in the MCU – first that means Black Panther 2 releasing in theaters, with Coogler returning at some point afterward to make a Wakanda-based series for Disney+. There’s little to nothing known about that show at this time, but as for the movie, Black Panther 2 will see Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Angela Basset return as their characters from the first film as well as Infinity War and Endgame. Filming is expected to begin in July 2021, with the movie releasing a year later in July 2022.

Captain Marvel 2 – November 11, 2022

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

There was never any doubt about Marvel developing Captain Marvel 2; the question was when it would happen. Now fans know it’s coming next year and will tie into two TV series on Disney+. The first Captain Marvel movie was a prequel that took place in the 1990s, despite being the last film to hit theaters before Avengers: Endgame. This time, the sequel will be set in the present day and include a much more powerful Captain Marvel, someone who’s fought numerous villains and gone toe-to-toe with Thanos. But she won’t be alone; she will be joined by two new heroes who’ve been given a spotlight on TV.

Iman Vellani will appear as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, an Inhuman in the comics who develops superpowers of her own after first being a massive Captain Marvel fan. Teyonah Parris will also reprise her role as an adult Monica Rambeau; although her character was introduced in the first Captain Marvel movie, Parris made her franchise debut in WandaVision, working for her mother’s agency, SWORD. During the events of that story, Monica unlocked her Spectrum powers, which will be in full focus in Captain Marvel 2 – but the sequel may also have to resolve the post-credits scene tease from WandaVision about Monica joining Nick Fury and the Skrulls.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – 2022

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Partly because of the pandemic, 2022 will mark the first time that five MCU movies release in one year. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – a movie title that delivers on the series’ joke of people putting “quantum” in everything – is the last confirmed movie to release next year, and it will bring back Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the eponymous characters, Ant-Man and The Wasp, respectively. They will be joined by the original Ant-Man and Wasp characters as well, played by Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer. Other cast members include Katheryn Newton as Cassie Lang (a role that’s been recast) and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.

The previous two Ant-Man movies focused on relatively small-time villains, but this time, the third film is upping the ante significantly. Kang the Conqueror is an iconic villain in Marvel Comics, someone who time travels from the 31st century to Ancient Egypt to the present day, and back to the future, all to conquer the planet. He has connections to the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, but since the Quantum Realm was first explored in the Ant-Man series, it makes sense for the next installment to bring the time traveling villain into the MCU. Whatever happens in this film, it could be the springboard Marvel needs to tell their Phase 5 story.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – 2023

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Another movie expected to release six years after the previous installment in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Originally, the plan was to release the film in 2020, but the behind the scenes shakeup resulted in the sequel being delayed a few years. Now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will enter production in late 2021 for a release date sometime in 2023, presumably the summer like the previous two movies. Given it’s still in development, details regarding the story and characters are scarce, but it’s been confirmed so far that the third movie will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame; however, it’s unclear if that also means after Thor: Love & Thunder.

Although it will be at least six years between movies in the main trilogy, the Guardians team had appeared in both Avengers: Infinity War, in which Gamora died, and Avengers: Endgame. Next up they will appear in Thor: Love & Thunder in summer 2022 before returning for a TV special on Disney+ called The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Presumably, the main cast of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillian, and Pom Klementieff will reprise their roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but those details should be confirmed when filming begins.

Blade

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Only Mahershala Ali can call the head of Marvel Studios and practically hire himself for a major movie role, but thankfully he did, because now that means fans can finally get the MCU’s version of Blade on the big screen. With aliens, gods, sorcerers, and Infinity Stones, Marvel has had its fair share of weird so far, but Blade will mark a new era for the franchise, one that deals with vampires. It’s not something the MCU has hinted at before, but Sony’s Morbius can pave the way for a modern iteration of Blade. The film is currently being written, with plans to begin filming by the end of 2021. That means Blade could release at the start of Phase 5, depending on which film marks the end of Phase 4.

Fantastic Four

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

20th Century Fox made two attempts at launching a Fantastic Four series, and both unfortunately fell by the wayside, despite the fact that the first attempt did produce a sequel. Now Marvel Studios has their own version of Fantastic Four in the works, which will be helmed by the same director of the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, Jon Watts. Nothing is known about the movie at this time, but the fact that a director is attached and that Marvel made mention of it during their Phase 4 announcement in 2019 shows that there’s an active interest in developing it. It’s possible Fantastic Four could release sometime in 2023 or 2024.

Deadpool 3

All 14 Marvel Movies Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier

Unlike with Fantastic Four, Marvel Studios isn’t rebooting Deadpool right now, which is a smart decision considering he’s perhaps the most popular mutant character after Wolverine. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 performed remarkably at the worldwide box office, and that’s a success story Disney and Marvel will attempt to continue with Deadpool 3, which is also confirmed to take place within the shared universe. Exactly how Deadpool himself joins the MCU is unclear, but given Phase 4 is all about the multiverse, it’s not far-fetched to assume that will have something to do with it. Deadpool 3 is currently being written, with Ryan Reynolds expected to return. Furthermore, it will be R-rated – a first for the MCU, but hopefully not the last.

Captain America 4

Shortly after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s finale released, in which Sam Wilson officially became Captain America, it was announced Captain America 4 was in the works. Not much is known about the film at this time other than it’s being written by the TV series’ head and staff writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. However, it’s safe to assume Anthony Mackie will star as the new Captain America, and he may have to go against his friend Sharon Carter, whose story as the Power Broker has turned her into a villain. And unfortunately, it may be some time before the movie releases due to it being announced in April 2021.
