All 7 Shows The CW Just Cancelled And Why They Were Axed

It was a huge loss for several network television shows this past weekend. The CW recently axed a whopping seven series from their network in a near-overhaul of their lineup. These changes came after the heartbreaking cancellation of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow after seven seasons. That series ended on a cliffhanger that now will never be resolved, as the Arrowverse continues to dwindle.

In addition to Legends of Tomorrow, The CW also decided to cancel Batwoman. Unlike Legends, some fans agreed it was the right decision to cancel the show after three seasons. But not every series had run its course — many of them were cancelled relatively early or when they seemed likely to return. Here’s what The CW recently got rid of, and what’s being said about why the shows ended.

Naomi Was Canceled Two Days After Its Season 1 Finale

The superhero series Naomi just premiered on The CW in January — and it’s already over. The series was based on the eponymous comic book series written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker. Naomi followed teenager Naomi McDuffie and her adventures to find out about her mysterious past. The CW cancelled Naomi almost immediately after its season finale. While the series struggled with viewership, the merger between Discovery and Warner Bros. may have also affected the fate of Naomi, as the former is looking to go in new directions.

Legacies Didn’t Match the Run of The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries spinoff series Legacies was canceled after four seasons on The CW. Legacies premiered in 2018 after The Originals, another TVD spinoff, ended. Legacies followed teenage protagonist Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall, at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Some actors reprised their TVD roles in Legacies, including Matt Davis and Zach Roerig. However, the show didn’t enjoy the longevity of either that series or The Originals. With Collider pointing out the show’s viewership had been declining, this could be the end of the franchise.

4400 Was An Unsuccessful Reboot

According to Distractify, 4400 was canceled due to poor ratings. The science fiction series was intended as a reboot of the 2004-2007 cult hit The 4400, in which over 4,000 people disappeared and then returned with no memories of what happened. However, the CW series changed so much from the original USA version that it bore little resemblance, though original star Patrick John Flueger did make a guest appearance (as a different character). The show’s first and only season ended with a massive attack, clearly setting up for a Season 2 that won’t be happening.

Roswell, New Mexico Was Canceled Before Its Season 4 Premiere

The original Roswell series premiered on The WB in 1999 and was based on Melinda Metz’s Roswell High book series, which detailed the lives of high school students (some of them aliens) in the titular town. It was hugely popular, so it was no surprise that The CW wanted to revive the property. Roswell, New Mexico aired on The CW in 2019, and was renewed for a fourth season that will premiere on June 6. However, the network decided Season 4 will be the show’s last for an as yet unknown reason.

The crime drama In the Dark debuted on The CW in 2019. The series followed a blind woman named Murphy Mason, who came across a corpse on a walk with her guide dog and began to investigate a murder. The show also opened up in later seasons to focus more on Murphy’s struggling social life. Despite In the Dark’s renewal for a fourth season, the series was canceled ahead of its Season 4 premiere date (which is also June 6). Collider addressed how the series had seen its audience decline, which was why The CW elected to cancel it.

Charmed Reboot Wasn’t as Popular as the Original

Charmed was immensely popular show on The WB for eight seasons. The CW tried to match the success of the original series when the Charmed reboot premiered in 2018, After some initial drama when the original cast had differing opinions about the project, the show aired four relatively strong seasons. According to Collider, the most recent season had struggled to maintain its audience and that’s why there won’t be a Season 5.

The Dynasty Finale Left Viewers Hanging

The 2018 series Dynasty was rebooted from the 1980s prime time soap opera with the same title. On The CW, the setting was moved from New York City to Denver. Dynasty aired five seasons and was successful on Netflix, but according to Deadline, the show’s weak ratings were the primary cause of it finally ending. The bad news for fans is that Season 5 ended on a cliffhanger. The CW had long been a home for shows that were popular if low-rated, but with new ownership, th network is finally cleaning house.
