When most people think about which superhero has been on the big screen the most, their minds tend to go toward Tony Stark/Iron Man. While it’s true that he has appeared in the most, at 10, many might not realize that Wolverine is right behind, appearing in nine films.
The popular X-Men character played by Hugh Jackman has been part of all three series in the franchise. That’s the original films of the early 2000s, the prequel movies of the 2010s, and his own solo trilogy. The only X-Men installment not to feature Wolverine was 2019’s Dark Phoenix. His total amount of screen time varies and sometimes correlates to how well received they are. This list will not include his appearances through archive footage in Deadpool 2 and The New Mutants.
9 X-Men Origins: Wolverine (6.6)
It’s not shocking that this is the film to rank last but it’s probably something of a surprise that the score is as high as it is. For the most part, this 2009 movie was panned by both critics and fans alike. Though a commercial hit, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was considered to have a muddled plot, wonky CGI, and some lackluster action.
Audiences also viewed this as delivering disappointing depictions of characters like Gambit and Deadpool. However, most people did feel that once again, Jackman was the highlight as Wolverine and proved he had the charisma to lead his own movie, which led to sequels.
8 The Wolverine (6.7)
Four years after X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the titular character got a second solo film with 2013’s The Wolverine. This was a riskier attempt as it cast aside other popular Marvel characters and moved the story to Japan, pulling plot elements from a famed Chris Claremont and Frank Miller comic arc.
Though the IMDb score isn’t much different, audiences were much warmer to this installment. It was considered to feature enjoyable action and some surprisingly strong character moments for Logan, though the final act was seen to be a bit too cliché overall.
7 X-Men: The Last Stand (6.7)
Coming in tied with the previous entry, X-Men: The Last Stand ranks higher due to having more total reviews on IMDb. The 2006 film was highly anticipated as the third leg of the original X-Men trilogy. With the first two movies getting strong praise, this had a lot to live up to.
Unfortunately, it mostly missed the mark with a new director and limited screen time for the likes of Cyclops. Wolverine played a key part here, as his relationship with Jean Grey was what allowed him to deal the emotional and crushing blow that stopped her as the Phoenix.
6 X-Men: Apocalypse (6.9)
After a cameo in the first X-Men prequel movie and a huge role in the follow-up, the presence of Wolverine in the third entry was up in the air. Timeline-wise, it may have felt forced to have the character show up in an era where his whereabouts were basically known.
However, 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse made it work well enough. Several of the young X-Men were captured by William Stryker and while there, Weapon X got loose. Weapon X happens to be Wolverine, who had an interesting encounter with Jean Grey before running off. The film itself was met with a mixed response at best.
5 X2: X-Men United (7.4)
In the eyes of many fans, this was the ultimate X-Men movie for a long time. In fact, many saw it as the peak of superhero cinema for a time. Today, 2003’s X2: X-Men United holds up mostly well but doesn’t quite rank as high as longtime fans may have believed.
Thanks to the popularity of Jackman’s performance as Wolverine, the character was again at the forefront. His past as Weapon X and his relationship with Stryker were both focused on. Wolverine also got a great fight as he battled Deathstrike, a female mutant with similar abilities.
4 X-Men (7.4)
This is the one that started it all. When Hugh Jackman was initially cast as Wolverine in 2000’s X-Men, nobody knew what to expect. The character was already iconic but Jackman didn’t have a long career and was relatively unknown when he landed the part.
Of course, he went on to arguably steal the show in the first movie and became a star. Wolverine is kind of the protagonist as fans see the X-Men through his eyes more often than not, he’s crucial to the story, and his relationship with Rogue plays a huge part in the plot.
3 X-Men: First Class (7.7)
After the struggles of X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the franchise looked to kind of start over. So, they opted to go with a prequel series beginning with 2011’s X-Men: First Class, which followed the likes of Charles Xavier and Magneto in their early days.
The movie was met with overwhelming praise thanks to the performances of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and others, as well as some exciting action scenes. Wolverine has an epic cameo when Charles and Erik attempt to recruit him.
2 X-Men: Days Of Future Past (7.9)
At the time, 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past was only behind The Avengers as the biggest scale event in a superhero film. It took the characters from the original trilogy and blended them with the prequel stars in a wild time traveling adventure that critics and fans loved.
Wolverine was put at the center of the tale as the time traveler instead of Kitty Pryde, who did it in the comics. He was chosen due to his popularity and the character’s ability to heal and not age much. The film managed to balance the large ensemble well and deliver a special experience.
1 Logan (8.1)
If you’re going to go out, you might as well go out with a bang. Thankfully, that’s just what Hugh Jackman did in his final performance as Wolverine which came in 2017’s Logan. Taking story elements from the “Old Man Logan” comic book arc, it is considered one of the best superhero films ever made.
With Logan in a much darker future and on the verge of death, he’s sent on a final mission to protect a young girl with powers just like his. Logan was praised for the emotion, the acting, and it made history as the first superhero movie nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars.
