All American Why Layla Wanted To Shoot A Gun For Her Birthday

Here’s why Layla Keating wanted to shoot a gun for her birthday in All American season 4. The CW’s high school football drama has mostly focused on Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and his story throughout the previous three seasons. Season 4, however, has put more of an emphasis on some of the show’s other characters from the start. This is largely due to the fallout of All American season 3’s ending and showing what happens next for Coop, Layla, and others.

All American season 4 episode 2 revolves around Layla’s 18th birthday. This comes on the heels of Layla (Greta Onieogou) moving in with the Bakers, and they decide to help throw a big party to show her how much she is loved. Despite Layla insisting that she doesn’t want to make a big deal out of her birthday, her friends and family decide to move forward with the party anyway. This becomes a central location for the episode and the place where Layla realizes that she needs to take more ownership over her own life. It is that realization and talking to Olivia (Samantha Logan) that encourages Layla to speak up more and tell her newly recast father, JP Keating, some harsh truths.

Once Keating realizes that Layla didn’t enjoy her birthday, he offers to take her to do anything she wants instead. In a somewhat surprising move, Layla chooses to go to a gun range and practice shooting. JP asks if she’s sure she wants to shoot the gun, and Layla confirms it’s what she wants to do. Some viewers might question why Layla suddenly has the desire to shoot a gun, and rightfully so. The answer actually goes back to Layla becoming an adult, and wanting to take control of her life, in addition to tying into the character’s sense of feeling vulnerable and unsafe. Her desire to shoot a gun, and possibly own one, gives her some protection as she attempts to improve her mental health.

Layla originally expressed that she felt unsafe in her everyday life during a conversation with JP in the All American season 4 premiere. This heart-to-heart is where Layla first expresses that living with her father and oftentimes being alone is what drove her to feel like she wasn’t protected. It isn’t too surprising then that Layla wanted to shoot a gun for her birthday. She wants to feel in control of her life and have a sense of security no matter what life brings her way, and who is there to support her. This is what is driving her interest in using a firearm—and she proves to be a pretty good shot early on.

Now that Layla could begin regularly training with a gun to make herself feel more at ease, it should be fascinating to see what All American season 4 does with this part of her story. The show wouldn’t include this moment at the end of episode 2 if it wasn’t meant to set up something else for down the road. It’s possible that Layla shooting a gun will result in her then using it to protect herself or save someone else, such as Coop (Bre-Z), later on in All American season 4. However, there’s also the chance that Layla’s interest in guns could create other problems for her or the Bakers.
