Mephisto might make his MCU debut in WandaVision, but what are all of this super-powerful being’s powers and abilities in the comics?

There are a lot of ways the Marvel equivalent of the devil, Mephisto, could appear in the MCU. One of them is through WandaVision. Though he hasn’t made an appearance through the first eight episodes of the series, there are enough hidden references to him to suggest he might have actually already appeared.
If he does appear at any point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then Wanda and the rest of the Avengers are in a lot of trouble. Mephisto is one of the most powerful beings in the comic books, with a range of abilities that puts him at the very top of the power index in the Marvel Universe.
10 Super Strong
One of Mephisto’s core powers is super strength. Though it’s really unnecessary given the scope of his other abilities, Mephisto nevertheless utilizes his brute physical power quite a bit. He frequently does it against his enemies by overpowering them physically and holding them in his grip.
He did this to the Silver Surfer in his very first appearance in the comics in Silver Surfer #3 in 1968, written by Stan Lee and drawn by John Buscema. Not only that, but he also made a habit of forcibly fighting Daredevil, Thanos, and other characters.
9 Shape Shifter
One of Mephisto’s favorite tricks is to dramatically increase his size. He is a shape-shifter who can make himself gigantic or even change shape entirely.
He tripled his size against the Fantastic Four, particularly when facing off Franklin Richards, the son of the Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic, whose reality-warping powers represent a serious threat to Mephisto (even more so now that Franklin is an adult). He can also become more monstrous creatures, like a snake, dragon, and other demonic visages.
8 Soul Acquisition
Mephisto came into conflict with the Fantastic Four in issue #277 of the series in 1985 because he actually stole the souls of Reed and Sue Richards. This is a common gambit of Mephisto’s and one of his most terrifying powers. He typically cannot steal another person’s soul if they don’t enter into some kind of pact with him, though.
One of the most tragic displays of Mephisto’s powers in this regard has to do with the children of The Vision and Scarlet Witch, Tommy and Billy Maximoff. It was revealed they were actually magical constructs based on fragments of Mephisto’s own soul. He reabsorbed them, effectively destroying them forever, and leading to Wanda’s breakdown in the House Of M comic book.
7 Invulnerable
Mephisto was essentially unstoppable in the tragedy of Tommy and Billy, even in a weakened state, because he is extremely impervious to attack. His natural physical being, combined with his supreme power over magic, makes him invulnerable.
This was on full display in the Infinity War epic in the comics, when Thanos overpowered Mephisto with the Infinity Gauntlet. This was also mostly a gambit on Mephisto’s part, who allied himself with Thanos to get his hands on Gauntlet.
6 Immortal
Mephisto can be killed, however. His physical form is susceptible and can be destroyed. The only problem is, as soon as it is, Mephisto regenerates back in his native Hell dimension. This makes him functionally immortal.
Even when Franklin Richards fragmented his soul – perhaps the most devastating blow Mephisto had suffered to that point – he was able to survive and reincorporate himself. He was also able to withhold the magical attacks of both Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch, and Wanda Maximoff, in the process.
5 Sorcerer
Mephisto’s primary power derives from magic. Mephisto is thought to be one of the oldest beings in the Marvel Universe, created in the same moment as the universe and contemporary to powerful entities like Chthon, Lord of Chaos, and the source of chaos magic.
Mephisto can perform a broad array of magical acts, from projecting illusions to conjuring beings from thin air. He frequently uses his power to alter his own appearance while visiting Earth, including appearing as a fly and other people.
4 Memory Manipulation
One of Mephisto’s go-to magical tricks is to manipulate a person’s memories. He did against the Silver Surfer in their very first encounter, tricking the former herald of Galactus into a potential bargain.
He also later did the same thing when he effectively erased all knowledge from the world that Spider-Man was Peter Parker. This occurred after the Civil War event in which Peter Parker revealed his identity publicly. This led to his enemies coming after him and his family, and the fatal injury of Aunt May.
3 Time Alteration
One More Day is a significant Spider-Man comic book storyline that the MCU should probably avoid adapting. That said, it’s a major display of Mephisto’s power. In order to save the life of Aunt May, Peter and Mary Jane make a deal with Mephisto to trade the existence of their marriage for May’s life.
The fallout from the story continues, with Peter and Mary Jane still unmarried and the status of their marriage a gray area in continuity no one really explores. But Mephisto was able to erase it entirely from existence, indicating his powers can influence space and time.
2 Energy Absorption And Blasts
One of Mephisto’s most significant powers is energy absorption. He can actually absorb the latent energy of evil entities in the Marvel Universe, as he did from the alien Dire Wraiths in Fantastic Four #277. This only increases his power and potential against his foes.
He can also redirect that energy back out in the form of energy beams. These are often brutal in scale and scope, and he most often uses them against his many demon followers in Hell, who have no defense against his power.
1 Reality Alteration
Mephisto can manipulate time and space to a great degree in the world, but in his own dimension, his power is far more considerable. Mephisto can alter the structure of reality within the dimension to his liking, in ways that would be imperceptible or incomprehensible to outsiders.
He was even able to make the dimension the equivalent of a bad meal when Galactus entered Hell with the intention of consuming it. Galactus found he wasn’t able to digest the dimension as he does planets, and ultimately retreated.
