Always Be My Maybe Cast & Character Guide

Here’s a guide to the cast and characters of romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. Netflix original movies tend to be something of a mixed bag, with the likes of Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic The Irishman and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story being acclaimed, while 6 Underground or The Do-Over were met with a much more negative response. Always Be My Maybe debuted on the streaming service in 2019 and quickly won viewers over by its sheer charm.

Always Be My Maybe follows two childhood friends who had a brief fling that later reconnect, but their path to romance is far from easy. The movie was praised for its comedy writing, performances and its non-stereotypical approach to Asian-American characters. A scene-stealing cameo by a certain beloved actor didn’t hurt its reception either.

Here’s a quick rundown of Always Be My Maybe’s characters and the actors who play them.

Ali Wong – Sasha Tran

Comedian Ali Wong (Birds Of Prey) co-wrote Always Be My Maybe and stars as Sasha, a celebrity chef who splits from fiance Brandon Choi (Daniel Dae Kim) when the movie begins. She heads back to San Francisco to open a new restaurant, where she reconnects with former flame Marcus and the two (very) slow start to fall for one another.

Randall Park – Marcus Kim

Randall Park (Fresh Off The Boat) plays Marcus in Always Be My Maybe, and also co-wrote the screenplay with Ali Wong and Michael Golamco. Marcus is a loveable slacker who works with his dad but really wants to be a musician. After some false starts, which includes picking a fight with a movie star, Marcus and Sasha start seeing each other, though her plans to leave San Francisco mean they may not have a future.

James Saito – Harry Kim

Altered Carton’s James Saito plays Harry in the film, Marcus’ kindly father. Harry and Marcus reunite with Sasha when they’re hired to work on her home, and while he’s a modest man in his own right he wants his son to pursue his dreams and not cling onto the past, which includes lingering grief over the death of his mother when he was a teenager.

Michelle Buteau – Veronica

Michelle Buteau plays Sasha’s best friend and assistant Veronica in Always Be My Maybe. Veronica is also heavily pregnant when the movie begins and is generally pushing her friend to find what makes her happy.

Keanu Reeves – “Keanu Reeves”

One of Always Be My Maybe’s best scenes comes when Marcus takes his soon to be ex-Jenny (Vivian Bang) on a double date with Sasha and her mysterious new beau – who turns out to be Keanu Reeves. While his role in the movie is small, Reeves does a hilarious job of sending himself up, and this disastrous date is the catalyst for Sasha and Marcus getting together.
