Director Marc Webb has been threading fan interest in his upcoming sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 by releasing a steady line of teaser images, which keep fans speculating about everything from plot details to possible characters that could be appearing in the movie.

Today’s image is yet another intriguing snapshot of a locale that could have major impact on the world of Peter Parker/Spider-Man – and we have a few guesses what it could be. We’ll also be entertaining theories as to who new cast member Marton Csokas (Lord of the Rings) could be playing.

First: actor Marton Csokas (seen above), who is best known for his roles in films like Bourne Supremacy, has joined the Amazing Spider-Man 2 cast. THR didn’t specify who Csokas is playing – though CBM pointed us to an IMDb listing that names him as Dr. Kafka, head of the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane (Spidey’s version of Arkham Asylum). Fans will point out that in the comics, Kafka is female – though with Jamie Foxx playing Max Dillon/Electro (a white character), following canon is clearly not a mandate for Webb and co.

In any event, Csokas is a busy man: THR also reports that he will play the villain antagonizing Denzel Washington and Chloe Moretz in the reboot of The Equalizer.

Previous teaser photos have given us looks at Ravencroft – though it was speculated that actor Colm Feore (seen above) was acting as the institute’s head. Regardless, it’s doubtful that either Csokas or Feore will have a major part to play – but feel free to speculate, nonetheless.

Mystery of the Gene Chamber

Moving on: here is the new teaser image that Webb released to commemorate day #73 of production:

Subtitled “The Future,” there is clear implication being made that this hi-tech chamber will be responsible for something drastic – an attitude that will seemingly be shared by the person entering the chamber, as evidenced from the discarded clothing and gun. The obvious questions are: Who enters the chamber? What drastic circumstances lead them to enter it? And, of course, who is it that enters?

For those who don’t know, Amazing Spider-Man 2 features confirmed villains Electro (Jaime Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti). We’ve already gotten official looks at Foxx in his pre-Electro stage and Giamatti in his pre-Rhino stage, but (aside from some unofficial set photos) we haven’t seen official versions of Spidey’s new super-powered enemies. Could this chamber be the cause of those respective transformations? Then again, given Webb’s cryptic tagline, “The Future,” could this scene be indicative of something beyond the storyline of the second film?

The most obvious guess would be that this chamber, the discarded clothing and gun foreshadow the moment where either Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) or his son, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), steps into chamber and is transformed into the Green Goblin. As depicted in the more modern Ultimate Spider-Man continuity (which this reboot draws from) Ultimate Green Goblin is a gene-spliced nightmare that is literally more monstrous than the version depicted in Sam Raimi’s film.

My own guess? I wouldn’t be surprised if the theme of fathers and sons that Webb started with in the first film didn’t carry over to the Harry/Norman relationship DeHaan recently discussed. Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn as a monstrous father (in the abusive sense) could be the catalyst to Harry doing the unthinkable (killing his father) and thereafter stepping into the chamber to prove he isn’t weak and can be powerful – like Electro and Rhino were endowed with power.

It would be a far departure from the comics, but would explain everything from the casting of Cooper (an older actor who is not known for being a franchise guy likely to don a goblin costume) – to the iconic set photo Webb sent DeHaan on his birthday (is it Green Goblin serum behind that locker door?). We’ll soon see how it all plays out – until then, leave us your best guess in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-Man will be theaters on May 2, 2014.
