Amazing SpiderMans Lizard Actor Teases His Return In No Way Home

Rhys Ifans, who played Dr. Curtis Connors, aka the Lizard, in The Amazing Spider-Man, teases his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third and final installment in Marvel Studios/Sony’s Homecoming trilogy releases in theaters this week. No Way Home picks up where Spider-Man: Far From Home’s credits scene left off, with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) fleeing NYC following Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealing Spider-Man’s identity and implicating him as a murderer.

No Way Home will cap off its respective trilogy and pay homage to Spider-Man cinema of old. In the film, Peter goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help undoing Mysterio revealing his identity as Spider-Man to the world. The subsequent spell goes awry and cracks open the multiverse, bringing a plethora of familiar villains into the MCU, including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman, and Lizard – most of which died fighting Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men in their universes. While fans have seen Doc Ock, Green Goblin, and Electro’s (human) faces in promotional material, Sandman and Lizard have only been seen in their CGI forms. That being said, there’s still doubt that Spider-Man 3’s Thomas Haden Church and The Amazing Spider-Man’s Rhys Ifans will reprise their roles of Flint Marko and Curtis Conners, respectively.

During a recent interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, Ifans was asked if he will be the actor playing Conners/Lizard in No Way Home. Without saying much, a smiling Ifans teased his MCU debut. Read what he had to say below:

“Well, you know, like most Christmas presents, the good thing is not knowing what’s in them until it’s time to open them.”

Ifans’ character first appeared in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, combating Garfield’s version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Conners/Lizard’s ultimate goal was to turn the human population into lizard hybrids. Fortunately, Spider-Man thwarts his plan by dousing New York with an antidote—a treatment that also affects Lizard, transforming him back into his human self. Lizard is arrested and doesn’t die in The Amazing Spider-Man. Lizard could be taken from Marc Webb’s universe before being dosed with the antidote. There’s no guarantee fans will see Ifans’ face before Lizard inevitably transforms back into a human at the end of No Way Home.

Being that Molina, Foxx, and Dafoe are confirmed to be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s hard to imagine the powers that be didn’t reach out to Ifans and Church to reprise their Spider-Verse roles as well. On top of that, although more reptilian in the face, Lizard’s design in Spider-Man: No Way Home appears to be the same as in The Amazing Spider-Man. That being said, audiences will get to see whether he gets punched by Garfield’s web-slinger on December 17.
