The Office star Rainn Wilson is joining the cast of Utopia, Amazon’s upcoming series from Sharp Objects writer Gillian Flynn. David Fincher was at one time set to produce his own version of Utopia at HBO, with Flynn on board as writer and Rooney Mara pegged to star, but that project was never picked up.
Instead of Fincher helping bring Utopia to screens, the director’s Gone Girl collaborator Flynn will take on the task without him. The Amazon show is based on a UK series of the same name that revolves around a group of young people who come into possession of an underground graphic novel whose conspiracy theory-laden stories may in fact not be works of fiction. The group soon finds itself being hunted by a mysterious deep state organization. Sasha Lane (American Honey) was previously named to take on the lead role in the nine-episode series.

As reported by TVLine, Rainn Wilson has now joined Lane in the cast of Utopia. Wilson reportedly plays Michael Stearns, a brilliant virologist who has fallen on hard times. After a deadly flu outbreak, Stearns offers up his expertise but is quickly sucked into something much larger than he ever imagined.
Wilson of course is still best-known for playing the eccentric Dwight Schrute on the classic NBC series (and now big time Netflix favorite) The Office. Last year, Wilson dove into blockbuster summer filmmaking with his appearance in the spectacularly over-the-top shark movie The Meg. Wilson also took on the task of resurrecting the iconic Star Trek: TOS character Harry Mudd on CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery, returning for an appearance in the one-off Short Trek episode “The Escape Artist.” Wilson’s upcoming slate includes a role opposite Kate Winslet and Sam Neill in the drama Blackbird, as well as a voice role in the animated film Robodog.
With his role in Utopia, Wilson once again adds to his eclectic and ever-growing resume. Wilson scored a huge hit the last time he joined an American adaptation of a popular UK series, that of course being The Office, and he’s hoping that history repeats itself as he teams with Flynn for Amazon’s new drama. Flynn herself has scored a series of successes both on the big screen and small, including last year’s acclaimed HBO series Sharp Objects and the theatrical release Widows. Flynn serves as both executive producer and writer for Utopia, so her stamp will be all over the project. Amazon has not yet announced a premiere date for the drama series.
