Amazons The Wheel Of Time News & Updates Everything We Know

Amazon’s The Wheel of Time TV show wrapped filming in May 2021, but what can viewers expect from it, and when will it be released? The series is based on The Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. In 2007, Jordan passed away. In accordance with his wishes, the series was completed by Brandon Sanderson, combining Jordan’s notes with conversations with Jordan’s widow and editor, Harriet McDougal.

If it is successful, The Wheel of Time could very well be the next TV show to achieve Game of Thrones’ success. It will certainly have plenty of material to draw from, with the series spanning 14 main books and one prequel book. The sprawling fantasy series follows many characters and tells the story of how the world is changed by the reincarnation of legendary leader the Dragon. His reincarnation causes dissension; multiple factions seek to control the Dragon, including the Aes Sedai and the Darkfriends, while the Whitecloaks would rather see him put to death.

This is not the first attempt at a Wheel of Time TV show. In 2015, Red Eagle Entertainment produced a rushed 22-minute pilot episode called Winter Dragon to secure their continued claim to the rights. The pilot was universally panned by fans and Harriet McDougal made such negative comments about the episode that Red Eagle Entertainment sought legal action against her.

Amazon’s Wheel Of Time Release Date

Amazons The Wheel Of Time News & Updates Everything We Know

The Wheel of Time TV show is expected to premiere in November 2021. During a panel at JordanCon in 2021, Brandon Sanderson indicated that he would be interested in seeing fan reactions after the initial episodes, suggesting that the show will see an episodic release rather than be released as a season block, which follows the usual release format for Amazon originals. So far, no exact date has been announced for the first of the hour-long episodes. Amazon has already renewed The Wheel of Time for a second season, however.

Amazon’s Wheel Of Time Cast

Cast announcements have been extensive, including many minor characters from Emond’s Field as well as Tinkers, farmers, and Whitecloaks that are met in passing. Here are some key characters already confirmed for The Wheel of Time TV show. Rosamund Pike is set to lead the cast as the Aes Sedai Moiraine. Her Warder, al’Lan Mandragoran, will be portrayed by Daniel Henney. Rand al’Thor, Perrin Aybara, and Mat Cauthon will be played by Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, and Barney Harris, respectively. Madeleine Madden will play Egwene al’Vere, while Zoë Robins will play Nynaeve al’Meara. Lastly, Sophie Okonedo will play Siuan Sanche.

Amazon’s Wheel Of Time Story Details

While Amazon has not released exact plot details for The Wheel of Time TV show, the casting and promotional materials hint at where the focus will be for the first season. The show looks set to focus on Moiraine as she arrives in Emond’s Field from the White Tower in search of the Dragon Reborn. Unsurprisingly, the show will follow a part of the plot from the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of The World. However, a deep dive on the casting announcements indicate that season one may not fully complete the narrative of the first book. Basel Gill, the innkeeper the group meets on their arrival in Caemlyn, has been cast, but Elayne, who is introduced a short time later, has not been announced. This suggests that season 1 will end with their arrival in Caemlyn, without continuing to Fal Dara.

Other casting reveals suggest that Amazon’s The Wheel of Time TV show will also be drawing on material from the prequel novel New Spring. Siuan Sanche, for example, is not seen until the very end of The Eye of The World, but plays an important role in New Spring. Similarly, Aes Sedai Alanna Mosvani and Liandrin Guirale appear in New Spring but do not enter the main books until The Great Hunt, yet will be in season 1 of the TV show for at least one episode.

Amazon’s Wheel Of Time Trailer

Amazon has not yet released a complete trailer for The Wheel of Time TV show. The show has a lot to live up to in Jordan and Sanderson’s books, so it is likely that Amazon is holding off on releasing a full trailer to avoid the show being prejudged. They have instead provided short teasers of the title, a glimpse of Moiraine, and one of Lan.
