American Dad! is full oy irreverent fun and bizarre characters, but these 10 particular storylines were absolutely ridiculous.

There are a lot of absurd animated series on TV but one of the most ridiculous by far is American Dad. The story of a CIA man and his family who are harboring an alien and a goldfish with the mind of a German skier tends to get a little odd from time to time.
Even after seventeen seasons on the air, American Dad keeps finding ways to make things increasingly wild; its drive is actually impressive. Still, there are a few stories that stand out above and beyond the rest as some of the strangest the show ever aired.
10 The Roast
When Roger’s birthday rolled around, the family planned their usual trip to the bowling alley. As it turned out, Roger had other ideas. He wanted this birthday to be special and more or less forced the Smiths to roast him. They obliged, and things quickly went south.
Instead of laughing the jokes off as good natured fun as one is supposed to, Roger took them all personally and went on a rampage. The Smiths had to escape to space to survive. Even there, he caught up with them and forced them to roast each other.
9 Avery Bullock Dates Hayley
Stan’s boss at the CIA, Deputy Director Avery Bullock, should not be in a position of any sort of power. Simply put, the man is just too unstable.
One episode saw the most horrific thing possible happen to the Smiths when Bullock started dating Stan and Francine’s oldest daughter, Hayley. It was an incredibly awkward situation for Stan given the ongoing conversations about Bullock’s sexual relationship with Hayley.
8 Cyborg Stan Comes For Francine
Stan is known for a lot of things, few of which are remotely positive. But one of his worst qualities tends to be how selfish he can be, which is something that constantly upsets Fran. Frankly, Stan takes her for granted.
Then, a Cyborg version of Stan came back from the future in an attempt to win Francine back for himself. This finally prompted Stan to take his relationship with Francine seriously, and he started treating her better. Until the next episode, at least.
7 Francine Becomes A Concrete Mogul
When the family was forced out of the house by an awful gas created by Roger eating ochre, they had to stay at a hotel. Francine was bored with her routine and ended up impersonating someone at a concrete convention. This leads to her adopting that life and mysteriously leaving her family.
Ten years later, Francine returned to the hotel and used it to time travel into the past to correct her mistake. She ultimately went back to her family. If that’s not strange enough, Steve became obsessed with a painting, traveled back in time to the 1980s and became the subject for the painting.
6 Klaus And Roger Date
It’s hard to say which character is more strange. Roger is a ridiculous alien who maintains dozens upon dozens of alternate personas. Klaus, on the other hand, is quite literally the mind of a German skier crammed into the body of a goldfish.
At a low point in their lives, the fish and the alien were both looking for love. They unexpectedly found it with each other and actually started dating. Unsurprisingly, the whole thing didn’t go to well for anyone involved.
5 Jeff In Space
Keeping in mind that Stan really wasn’t a fan of their relationship, supporting character Jeff Fischer was Hayley’s on again, off again boyfriend for quite some time. Eventually, they got married and Jeff changed his last name to Smith.
One of the stranger ongoing stories in the series saw Jeff be kidnapped by aliens like Roger. He was gone from the show for quite some time, long enough that fans started questioning if he would ever return. He did and things went back to “normal.”
4 Roger Drives A Limo
Homer Simpson has had a lot of jobs over the years, but it’s entirely possible that Roger has had even more. The vast majority of Roger’s many personas have their own professions, some of which require advanced degrees.
When Roger decided to become a limo driver, he was stiffed by his first clients. Roger then went on a murderous rampage, killing five people over a few dollars. For good measure, Roger also randomly murdered a stewardess.
3 Stan Tries To Take Steve’s Virginity
The relationship between Stan and his son Steve is tumultuous at best. They do love each other, but they are also extremely different people. It doesn’t help that Stan is one of the most selfish people in human history and often forgets his son exists.
When Francine confronted Stan about all of this, Stan responded by creating an attractive female avatar to romance Steve. It’s safe to say that wasn’t exactly what Francine had in mind. Fortunately, she was able to talk some sense into Stan before things got weirder.
2 The Ongoing Rapture
One thing American Dad has been successful at over the years has been developing ongoing gags and stories. There are a few strange subplots that have been built throughout several specific episodes. A big one is the ongoing post-apocalyptic Rapture stories.
The episodes featuring this alternate reality don’t happen back to back, or even during one season. But the story they string together is random in the best possible way and completely opposite to the overall tone of the series.
1 Roger’s Golden Turd
This is possibly the most ridiculous thing on American Dad. In Season 1, Episode 6, it’s revealed that Roger’s feces are really gold and gems. He left one of these precious stools in some bushes, and throughout the rest of the series, it kept popping up at random times and became part of a strange, ongoing subplot.
People were constantly killing each other over Roger’s expensive pile. It even factored into the Rapture storyline at one point. Roger’s Golden Turd most recently appeared in a season 15 episode, showing just how long this gag has been going on.
