CIA Deputy Director, Avery Bullock, is one of TV’s most laughable bosses. As the head of a CIA branch, Avery is a zany man-child who sees life through a very childlike lens. This results in a lot of funny moments and quotes whenever Avery is in a scene.

Like many characters on American Dad!, Bullock is a deviant, battling addiction problems. Despite this, the Deputy Director has a passion for the unconventional. Most of his adventures are consequences of his stupid, selfish, and reckless behavior. They are also, humorously, not real problems. However, because he is so coddled by his employees, he makes mountains out of molehills.

10 CIA: Cat Intelligence Agency

When Bullock notices a depressed Stan, he asks why he is so crestfallen. “The C in CIA doesn’t stand for crestfallen. But what if it stood for cat?” Bullock looks around the office, imagining his workers as different breeds and colors of cats.

Some cats in the meeting room are evidently working hard to catch what can only be assumed to be ‘Miao-Queda’. In Avery’s imagination, his miao-kers speak entirely in miaows, further proving that Avery is either very eccentric, always drug-addled, or even both.

9 “… While I Brush Your Hair”

Like Principal Lewis and Roger Smith, Avery Bullock has no limit when it comes to his illegal proclivities, both in and out of work. When his office accountant tells him they must spend $50,000 before the day is over, Avery decides to treat his employees to a day outside the office. When Stan confesses that he is uncomfortable being away from work, Avery dismisses his concerns.

Avery is not very good with women. Flaunting wads of cash thrown into a sack, he asks a woman to assault him while he brushes her hair. Most characters on American Dad clearly need mental health intervention, and Avery Bullock is one such character.

8 “Keep Your Eyes Out For The Rarest Of Birds.”

‘One Little Word’ follows Bullock on his quest to find a new girlfriend. When Stan becomes Bullock’s new ‘Number One’ man, Bullock deceives Stan into coming on a night out with him. A hugely sexist character, Avery objectifies women constantly.

“Keep your eyes out for the rarest of birds. The plump, Asian [woman],” Avery tells Stan in Patrick Stewart’s deadpan British humor.

Avery eventually decides to settle for a woman who is not his type. However, the scene ends with Avery getting assaulted after offering a lady a $1 bill to “earn” by doing what he wants.

7 “Not For Base Pleasure Certainly”

When Stan starts losing sleep, Bullock offers him some illicit drugs as a way to stay awake. After Stan reminds him that certain drugs are illegal, Bullock reassures Stan that he has “done it for thirty-two years.”

“See, I’m part of a group of responsible … users. We adhere to strict rules to ensure things don’t get out of control. It’s not used to feel good. Not for base pleasure certainly. It’s a medicine to improve our lives, like penicillin. ” After Stan rejects his second offer, Bullock asks for privacy so that he can engage in some more terrible behavior. A few seconds later, he falls from the ceiling in giddy excitement, proving him a liar that is “not for base pleasure certainly.”

6 “Don’t Tell Me. Tell Her!”

In ‘The Full Cognitive Redaction Of Avery Bullock By The Coward Stan Smith’, Avery chooses Stan to be his successor and mentee. Stan enjoys spending time with Avery, especially when Avery picks him up in his Lamborghini. When Avery allows Stan to drive, Stan confesses that he is very excited to drive the car. “Don’t tell me. Tell her!” Avery admonishes.

He assures Stan that the car is also very excited to be driven by him. This scene reveals Avery’s objectification of women to be incredibly sexist and ignorant. Audiences are encouraged to laugh at Bullock’s ignorance.

5 “I’ll Admit It. I’m A Degenerate”

Francine makes the Smiths promise that they would all stick to their lent fast in ‘Finger Lenting Good’. The family asks Avery to make sure that they stick to their promises during Mardi Gras. When Avery returns the next day to hold them accountable, he happily lists all his flaws to the Smiths.

“I’ll admit it. I’m a degenerate … My moral compass always points south. But during Lent, I repent, and that makes up for the rest of the year.” Avery Bullock is an antithesis to Roger. He fully admits his flaws and suffers no denial about his personality.

4 When He Described Hayley As a Conquest

Avery Bullock is an unabashedly sexist man. After having a brief affair with Hayley Smith in season one, he spends multiple seasons boasting about his sexist badge of honor. In ‘100 A.D’, he makes numerous innuendos to Reginald, another one of Hayley’s ex-lovers, prompting a fight between man and man-koala.

In the words of the CIA Deputy Director: “I had a thing with her one summer. ‘A thing.’ That’s a polite way of saying [it].” Coincidentally, despite his money, power, and status, Avery has significant trouble attracting women. This scene reveals that behind his bravado lies a man insecure about his dating prowess.

3 “Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!”

Most characters on American Dad are the opposite of straight-laced or wholesome. Avery Bullock is one such character. ‘I Can’t Stan You’ introduces audiences to a magic machine that turns water into illicit substances. Avery is insistent that he must keep the machine – for obvious reasons.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go party my nose clean off my face,” Bullock says before leaving to find some privacy. A later scene shows Bullock in a dingy motel room, wearing only his underwear. “Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Listen to me! Charlie! What’s your name again?” Bullock shakes as he speaks frantically.

2 The Day He Started To Like Playing Inside

Avery had matured rapidly during his time at a children’s summer camp. In the episode, ‘I Aint No Holodeck Boy’, Avery confesses to having enjoyed the experience deeply. He deliberately shows his employees his memories of his first time being with someone else.

In the memory, his British camp friend makes a deeply suggestive innuendo about Avery’s physical innocence. In response to this memory, present-day Avery says that he wasn’t innocent “for long.” “This was the day I started to like playing inside,” Avery proudly tells his employees.

Like any good boss, Avery is happy to take his employees out of the office on a team-building trip. To show his happiness, he quotes his own version of Dr. Seuss.
