American Horror Story is well-known for its recurring stable of actors, but some of the show’s performers opted to do one season and not return.

American Horror Story is well-known for its recurring stable of actors, but some of the show’s performers opted to do one season and not return. Over the nine, bloody, sexy, and scary seasons produced by American Horror Story so far, fans have gotten to see lots of actors not exactly known for their work within the genre let loose in a horror setting. Although funnily enough, the success of American Horror Story itself has led many to start thinking of people like Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett as horror greats.

It would seem that the set of American Horror Story is a fun working environment, as it’s extremely rare for an actor to join the series and not come back for at least one additional season. People like Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts almost have their own sub-careers going on with the amount of work they put in on the show, sometimes playing multiple characters in the same season.

Yet, there exists a small sub-set of notable stars who end up being one-and-done members of the American Horror Story cast. With the show renewed through season 13, it’s possible some of them might eventually change that, but for now, they’ve avoided becoming American Horror Story lifers. Presented below are those actors, but first a note. We’re only looking at famous actors who played some kind of substantial role on American Horror Story, so one-off bit players won’t be included.

Joseph Fiennes

Still probably best known for his leading role in the Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love, Joseph Fiennes played Monsignor Timothy Howard, the man in charge of the titular building in American Horror Story: Asylum. A man of devout faith, Howard is also a man fairly easily swayed toward allowing evil things to happen around him.

Lizzie Brocheré

French actress Lizzie Brochere will probably be most readily recognized by American audiences for her roles on The Strain and Falling Water. In Asylum, Brochere played Grace Bertrand, who was locked up after murdering her mother and stepfather. She ends up impregnated by aliens, and later murdered with an axe, because of course.

James Cromwell

While he’ll always be Babe’s owner to some, James Cromwell boasts a very distinguished career overall. On Asylum, Cromwell played against his usual type as Briarcliff’s Nazi doctor Arthur Arden, a literal mad scientist that performs horrific experiments on helpless patients.

Michael Chiklis

Best known for playing corrupt cop Vic Mackey on The Shield, Michael Chiklis played secretly gay strongman Dell Toledo on American Horror Story: Freak Show. One of the least likeable characters of the season, Dell murdered the beloved Ma Petite after being blackmailed.

Cuba Gooding Jr.

Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. has had a bit of an up and down career, but has managed to maintain a loyal fanbase. On American Horror Story: Roanoke, Gooding played Matt Miller in the reenactment segments of the show within a show, and later actor Dominic Banks.

Andre Holland

The rapidly rising Andre Holland, known for roles on Castle Rock and The Knick, played the real Matt Miller on Roanoke, and later encountered Dominic Banks, the actor who played him in My Roanoke Nightmare. Roanoke was probably a bit too meta for its own good, but that’s in the eye of the beholder.

Alison Pill

A regular on the acclaimed HBO drama The Newsroom, Alison Pill can currently be seen on Star Trek: Picard. During American Horror Story: Cult, Pill played Ivy Mayfair-Richards, the ultimately duplicitous wife of Sarah Paulson’s Ally, and a member of Kai Anderson’s cult.

Kate Mara

Back before really getting noticed as Zoe Barnes on Netflix’s House of Cards, Kate Mara played Dr. Ben Harmon’s scorned ex-lover Hayden McClaine on American Horror Story’s debut season. While Ben shouldn’t have had an affair with her, Hayden was clearly unstable, and she only got worse as a ghost.

Eric Stonestreet

A few years into his tenure as Cameron Tucker on the hit sitcom Modern Family, Eric Stonestreet guest starred on Murder House as Derek, a patient of Dr. Ben Harmon that was obsessed with possibly being killed by urban legend the Piggy Man.

Charles S. Dutton

A multi-time Emmy winner, Charles S. Dutton has been an in-demand character actor for decades, appearing in everything from Alien 3 to the sitcom Roc. Dutton guest starred on Murder House as Detective Granger, who investigated the murder of Travis Wanderly.

Ian McShane

Ian McShane became a household name thanks to his time as Al Swearengen on the hit HBO drama Deadwood, and more recently has played Continental boss Winston in the John Wick movies. On Asylum, McShane played Leigh Emerson, a man sent to Briarcliff after going on a murderous rampage in a Santa suit.

Patti LuPone

A Grammy and Tony-winning actress and singer, Patti LuPone is known for being a very consistent performer, and always seems to be working. On American Horror Story: Coven, LuPone played Joan Ramsey, a purportedly devout Christian who actually killed her own husband, and killed her son when he found out.

Celia Weston

A TV vet going back to the 1980s sitcom Alice, Celia Weston played Lillian Hemmings on American Horror Story: Freak Show, the unscrupulous owner of the American Morbidity Museum. Hemmings is perfectly willing to accept the body of a murdered “freak” into her growing collection.

Neil Patrick Harris

From his child star days as Doogie Howser to his adult fame as Barney on How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris should need little introduction. He played Freak Show’s Chester Crebs, a magician and salesman who hallucinates taunts from his ventriloquist dummy. So, the normal everyday role.

Naomi Campbell

Supermodel Naomi Campbell spent some time as actress Naomi Campbell on American Horror Story: Hotel, playing Claudia Bankson, the editor of Vogue and a buddy of fashion world big-shot Will Drake. She’s killed at the hotel, and returns as a fashionable ghost.

Lena Dunham

Girls star Lena Dunham can be a highly controversial figure at times, and she played another controversial figure in Cult, radical feminist activist Valerie Solanas. Solanas attempted to kill Andy Warhol in real-life, and on American Horror Story that’s used to have had her form a cult of fellow radicals.
