American Horror Story Roanoke Teaser Might Have Hinted Season 10s Theme

Ryan Murphy has teased that something is going to “wash up” on shore in season 10 of American Horror Story, and it’s possible that the theme – which has yet to be announced – was hinted at by an old teaser for season 6, Roanoke.

American Horror Story has become a staple of horror television since 2011. The anthology is good about keeping audiences entertained through its unique premise, which brings a different sub-genre and elements of horror to each season, making each a standalone with many actors returning to play new characters. Another unique strategy that Murphy has employed throughout his tenure as show runner is releasing teaser trailers about the upcoming season that relate to aspects of the plot, the overall theme, and drop a few hints. The hints and speculation surrounding seasons of American Horror Story has become a staple of fan culture, and Murphy has confirmed that he leaves hints in previous seasons regarding what’s coming in the future.

Murphy has already released a cast announcement trailer for season 10, which heralded the return of many fan-favorite actors, including Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, who were notably absent from season 9, 1984. The trailer and the first image released regarding season 10 have expressed a beach or ocean theme, which some have stated could either be related to a true crime case about the Lady of the Dunes or a more generic aquatic horror theme. However, there’s another theory from The AHS Zone on Twitter that season 10 has been planned for a while, dropping in the teaser trailer cluster for season 6, which aired in 2016.

Could AHS Season 10’s Theme Have Been Hinted At By Roanoke?

While also potentially a red herring from Murphy, one teaser, called “Tide”, showcased a strange transformation that was directly correlated with someone washing up on shore. Roanoke’s general premise involved a meta storyline where a reality television show called My Roanoke Nightmare incorporated a dramatic re-enactment of hauntings that a couple, Matt and Shelby, experienced after moving into an old farmhouse. Also incorporating a historical element, which is common in American Horror Story, Roanoke told the tale of the disappearance of the Roanoke colony, which happened in the 1500s. This theme was predicted early in the show as well, all the way back in season one, when the Roanoke colony – and the word “Croatoan” – was addressed in season 1, episode 11, “Birth”. Given that the season ended up being about the colonists five seasons later, it’s not too much of a stretch to think Murphy has the forethought to plan that far ahead.

In the teaser, there’s a person who has washed up onshore and seems to be riddled with a ghastly infection of some sort. While it certainly doesn’t fit entirely with the aquatic horror aspects of the first image and the cast announcement trailer, it does line up with current social commentary, given the state of the COVID-19 pandemic. If Murphy has had this idea in his back pocket, it’s possible he chose the perfect time to unleash it. His interest in keeping in-line with current events was also proven through the theme of season 7, Cult, which was all about the 2016 US Presidential Election. While there’s still the possibility that American Horror Story might experience some kind of delay due to social distancing and other stay-at-home measures, horror fans seem to flock to pandemic and even zombie-themed media to address the current times, which might make season 10 more popular than ever.
