American Idol alum David Archuleta disclosed on his Instagram page that he is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. The LGBTQIA+ mnemonic is meant to encompass the range of sexualities and gender identities first expressed in the gay rights movement that started with the Stonewall Riots in 1969 and has since greatly expanded to be more inclusive.

In 2008, David exploded onto the music and pop culture scene when he quickly rose to fame as one of the finalists in season 7 of American Idol. Only 17 years old at the time, David charmed judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and the very-hard-to-charm Simon Cowell, as well as fans, with his remarkable vocal range and poise for such a young man. Ultimately, he came in a close second in the final voting to David Cook but went on to enjoy a very successful singing career, releasing eight albums and numerous hits including “Crush.” It was just the next season that Adam Lambert rose to prominence on American Idol, only to be hesitant about coming out, concerned that it would have a negative impact but eventually publicly embracing his sexuality after, like David, placing second in the final voting.

David went into detail on Instagram about his journey of sexual identification. The American Idol alum shared that he first came out to friends and family as a gay man in 2014 but discovered soon thereafter that he possessed similar feelings for both genders, placing himself somewhere on the bisexual spectrum. Continuing with his self-realization, he now feels that he does not possess strong sexual desires, and he uses the term “asexual,” which he is comfortable with because, as he stated, he is saving himself for marriage. David also disclosed his struggle to reconcile his deeply religious Mormon faith with his sexual identification.

David’s very personal disclosure has arrived during Pride month. The American Idol alum’s voice is another addition to the chorus of those coming out and creating positive role models for those struggling with their identities and their religious faith. As David stated, “I don’t think it should come down to feeling you have to accept one or the other. For me to find peace, the reality has been to accept both are real things; I experience and make who I am. I’ve yet to figure out what that means, but I appreciate you listening to this personal matter.”

David’s post did not focus a lot on himself. He focused more on his call for compassion and understanding, not only with his Mormon faith but also a wider reconciliation and acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals across all faiths. The American Idol alum’s message from the heart has touched so many people.
