As if getting eliminated from American Idol just before the top 16 wasn’t bad enough, contestant Cecil Ray was arrested last month, and we have information about his life and background to share. Cecil Ray made an emotional impact on season 19 of the famous reality competition series. However, he was unable to sustain his run past the top 24. Cecil was later charged with burglary of habitation. It now appears that the competitor’s dreams of selling the most albums after American Idol will have to be put on hold.

Cecil Ray made his way to American Idol from his hometown of Cameron, Texas. He explained that he lived in a home with “holes in the roof [and] holes on the floor.” Before competing in the singing competition, Cecil worked as a machine operator and cared for his infant daughter. For his audition, Cecil performed “Talkin’ Tennessee” to judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie. The judges praised the young country singer. Luke Bryan (an accomplished country singer himself) told Cecil he believed he was “absolute perfection” and embodied what the American Idol competition is all about. Album-selling mastermind Katy Perry went as far as to say that Cecil reminded her of a country Justin Bieber.

On top of nailing his audition, Cecil shared a wealth of personal information with the Idol judges and viewers. He said he lost his brother, uncle, and friend to suicide. He lost one beloved person every year of his life from the ages of eleven to thirteen. Additionally, Cecil made a connection with Katy Perry, as the two bonded over having young children. Through the hardships and new beginnings, Cecil explained that music had inspired him to keep going.

Cecil’s audition ended with a warning from Katy Perry. She told the aspiring Texas singer he was at a crossroads in his life. Fortunately, Cecil received the green light from all three judges. He moved on to the Hollywood portion of the American Idol journey. In the genre challenge, Cecil performed “Shake the Frost,” for which multimillion-dollar Las Vegas residency star Katy Perry gave him a standing ovation. Cecil moved into the top 64, where he performed Leon Bridge’s “Beyond” for the “Showstoppers” category. Cecil made it all the way to the top 24, where he would perform “Paint Me a Birmingham” by Tracy Lawrence and “Freedom Was a Highway” by country stars Jimmie Allen and Brad Paisley. Unfortunately, Cecil’s aspirations to become the next winner came to an end when he did not receive enough viewer votes to advance to the top 16.

Cecil’s elimination from American Idol was not the end of his time in the spotlight. Days after he was booted from the singing competition, the Texas machine operator was arrested for burglary. In his home state of Texas on April 17, it was reported that Cecil was arrested and this got a lot of fan reactions. The charge meant he allegedly stole from a property he did not have permission to be in in the first place. In Cecil’s case, the property was his ex-girlfriend Mariah Lopez’s home. According to police reports, Mariah would not let Cecil into her home, so the eliminated American Idol contestant broke in by tearing open a locked door. Mariah alleged that Cecil then assaulted her. Cecil was released the same day he was arrested, on a $15,000 bond.
