The new generation of pop stars seem to love Katy Perry; however, the American Idol judge admits it makes her feel old when young singers reference her music in their songs. One of the Boys was Katy’s first album released under her stage name and was released on July 17th, 2008. The singer quickly skyrocketed to popstar status with her debut single, “I Kissed A Girl,” topping the Billboard 100 for seven consecutive weeks. She followed up her success with her album Teenage Dream, which debuted on Billboard 200 and included seven singles. The album quickly made Katy the pop star of the moment, and in 2011 the American Music Awards honored her with the Special Achievement Award for being the first female artist to have five #1 singles off one album.

Katy will take the stage on December 29th for her Vegas Residency at Theatre at Resorts World. Fans are anticipating the show titled Katy Perry: Play and expect she will perform her greatest hits and some fan-favorite songs. Since Katy’s time as the biggest pop star in 2010, newer pop stars have emerged and seem to be following in her footsteps. Olivia Rodrigo was one of the biggest stars of 2021 with her number 1 album Sour and referenced Katy’s hit song “Teenage Dream” in her album’s first track, “brutal.”

Now that young stars are referencing Katy’s past music, the singer is starting to feel old. In a recent interview with Out Magazine, Katy was asked how it makes her feel to see young stars referencing her music. The star replied, “old, honestly old.” Katy laughed and added, “It’s awesome. It means that the music is still resonating.” Katy seemed honored to hear that stars like Fletcher were fans of her songs, and while she can’t wrap her head around the idea that “full-on adults” will tell her they listened to her music as a kid, she’s happy that “the message still rings true for people.”

Katy also spoke about the impact her music has had on the LGBTQ community and how songs like “I Kissed A Girl” brought awareness to bisexuality and made members of the community feel heard. Singer Fletcher is openly a member of the community but chooses not to define her sexuality as she believes it is a spectrum. In October 2021, the singer released her song “girls girls girls,” which samples Katy’s song in its chorus. Katy is happy to see her song being sampled, saying, “it’s wonderful to have that stamp.”

Katy was just 21 when she first stepped onto the pop music scene, and now at 37, she’s a wife to Orlando Bloom and mother to their daughter Daisy Bloom; it’s understandable why seeing girls in their teens and early 20s referencing her music may make her feel old. As the younger generation has begun to obsess over late 2000s fashion and culture, Katy’s earlier music is having a second wind. The American Idol judge had some of the most popular and memorable music of the late 2000s to early 2010s and it’s great to see how its legacy is inspiring new artists. As Katy hits the stage for her Vegas residency, fans will surely be singing along to her greatest hits all night long.
