American Idol Production Underway for Landmark 20th Season

American Idol has started filming for season 20 of the hit singing competition series. Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry are all back on the judging panel, while Ryan Seacrest returns as host. The show was renewed back in May for a fifth season on ABC and the 20th season overall; American Idol moved from FOX to ABC back in 2018. The renewal announcement was followed with news that showrunner Trish Kinane would be stepping down and replaced by longtime executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick.

Last year, American Idol altered its audition process due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Open call auditions were entirely virtual, and production for the judges’ auditions was held entirely in California. This season, in addition to filming in Los Angeles, the show announced that it will also film the judges’ auditions in Austin, Texas; and Nashville, Tennessee. While fans know that Luke, Lionel and Katy are on the panel, there’s no word on whether or not Bobby Bones, the in-house mentor who has been a part of Idol since its move to ABC, will return.

Production is officially underway for American Idol season 20. Known for traveling across the country to film auditions, Michaels Wolflick spoke to Deadline about the upcoming season’s auditions: “Now we’re going to the biggest music cities in America, we’re able to go out again. We’re able to go to the places that make this show sing.” While the judges’ auditions are getting back to normal, the open call auditions were entirely virtual again this year. American Idol was known for finding singers through their annual bus tour, which producers couldn’t count on last season. But Michaels Wolfick believes that Idol Across America, the show’s virtual audition process, has actually improved the talent level. “I get so much more out of it, not to mention that I get a really interesting perspective on the youth of today and trends, whose posters are on their walls.” She also mentioned that the number of hopefuls who showed up for Idol Across America doubled this season.

When American Idol returns in 2022, the show will be entering its 20th anniversary. Having aired on ABC for four seasons, Idol fans tuned in for 15 seasons on its original network, FOX. It came as a surprise when ABC picked the show up just over a year after its “farewell” season, which set out to find the very last American Idol winner. Viewers may remember, though, when Seacrest implied that it may not be the end after all. Shortly after Trent Harmon was crowned as the winner of season 15, Seacrest signed off by saying “Good night America…for now.” Several years later, he’s gearing up to host season 20. Michaels Wolflick, who has worked on the show since season 2, teased that some surprises may be in store for this landmark season, saying, “With 20 years, we’re going to celebrate what’s come before while we also celebrate the new talent.” The show is expected to return in early spring, with an exact premiere date yet to be announced.

While American Idol may not have as many eyeballs glued to their screens as it used to, the show has done well considering the current primetime TV landscape. It’s interesting to note that NBC announced it will no longer air a spring season of The Voice, with original Idol winner Kelly Clarkson as one of its coaches. The two singing competitions have gone head-to-head for several years. Both shows have performed well, but Idol is known to be more successful at generating stars from its talent pool. Many fans would argue that since arriving on ABC, the show has launched more careers than it has in years, with contestants like Gabby Barrett and Alejandro Aranda having huge success. Time will tell if any of the American Idol season 20 hopefuls can live up to the show’s legacy.
