60-year-old Archie Williams has made it as a finalist on America’s Got Talent. The Louisiana singer has been a fan-favorite since his first performance of Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” Now that he’s made it through the semifinals, here’s everything to know about the exonerated TV star.
The Baton Rouge native performed an emotional cover of Westlife’s “Flying Without Wings” on Tuesday night’s episode that had the America’s Got Talent judges showering him with compliments. Williams dedicated the performance to his daughter he had just met for the first time after being wrongfully incarcerated for 37 years. He found out he was a father while still in prison. Last year, the Innocence Project helped exonerated Williams for a crime he did not commit. The singer spent decades in Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola for aggravated rape and attempted murder, despite authorities finding no matching fingerprints at the scene of the crime.
Williams was just 22-years-old when he was arrested on January 4, 1983. He was convicted on April 21, 1983, following a terrible trial where evidence had been fabricated, tampered with, and even withheld. During the trial, it was proven that the fingerprints were not his, and three witnesses provided testimony he was home asleep at the time of the crime. Despite the lack of evidence, Williams was sentenced and wouldn’t walk away as a free man until almost four decades later.
He originally reached out to the Innocence Project back in the 1990s after already serving over a decade in jail. The nonprofit organization had been working on his case for years when he was finally granted his freedom. During a visit to Steve Harvey’s show in 2019, Williams shared how singing and boxing were the two things that got him through his incarceration. He helped to train boxers during his time in jail. Once he left the gym, he would go back to his cell and read and listen to some of his favorite singers, including Elton John. He shared how he would always watch America’s Got Talent while in prison and had dreams of being on stage one day.
Since gaining his freedom, Williams was living New Orleans up until his audition. While on the show, he’s been staying with his aunt in Long Beach, California. In addition to America’s Got Talent’s judges, audience, and viewers, Williams has received praise from some of his favorite artists, including Stevie Wonder and Elton John. The contestant has been invited to perform with Elton when he returns to the United States. Meanwhile, Wonder is working on a song he plans to sing with Williams in the near future.
Williams is set to perform again next week for America’s Got Talent’s final two rounds. He’ll compete against aerialist Alan Silva, singing duo Broken Roots, spoken word poet Brandon Leake, drummer Malik DOPE, and child singer Roberta Battaglia.
