America’s Got Talent is pausing production on the show’s upcoming spin-off, AGT: Extreme. AGT has aired for 16 seasons, as well as two seasons of America’s Got Talent: The Champions. The new spin-off, which was announced earlier this year, is set to feature dangerous acts that can’t be confined to a theater stage. It was eventually revealed that Simon Cowell would judge the show alongside Nikki Bella and Travis Pastrana. Terry Crews, who hosts America’s Got Talent and has hosted AGT: The Champions, is set to host AGT: Extreme.

Another new element of AGT: Extreme is its location. Not only will the show take place in Georgia, but it’s also being filmed entirely outdoors. The show is designed to showcase acts that are too big or dangerous for the normal AGT stage. Throughout America’s Got Talent’s history, several danger acts have performed outside during different stages of the competition. Fans may remember season 6’s Professor Splash, who made it through several rounds of high-diving into a kiddie pool, or season 14’s Brian Miser, who described himself as a human slingshot. Season 10 featured an outdoor audition episode dedicated to extreme acts, and the season 15 Judge Cuts were held outdoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there has yet to be an entire series in the AGT franchise that takes place entirely outdoors.

As reported by People, Jonathan Goodwin, who competed on AGT season 15, was injured during a rehearsal for an upcoming taping of the spin-off. Jonathan was strapped in a straitjacket and suspended in the air, with two cars on either side of him. While he unlocked himself to land on an airbag, his timing was off. Jonathan was sandwiched in between the cars. He was airlifted to the hospital, underwent surgery and remains in critical condition in the trauma ward. An AGT production spokesperson issued the following statement: “[Jonathan] was responsive and was immediately taken to the hospital where he is continuing to receive medical care. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as we await further updates on his condition.” TMZ obtained audio of the 911 call with an on-set medic, as well as video footage of the incident that led to Jonathan being hospitalized.

Just a few days later, another AGT spokesperson confirmed that the spin-off, which only had a few more days of filming scheduled, would resume production at a later date. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with Jonathan Goodwin and his family as he continues to recover from his accident on Thursday. In order to focus on the wellbeing of our crew, we will be temporarily pausing production on America’s Got Talent: Extreme and will resume the last few days of filming at a later date. The health and safety of our cast and crew continue to be our priority.” Jonathan’s friend and fellow escape artist Jonathon Bryce posted an Instagram tribute, asking followers to keep Jonathan in their prayers, adding that he doesn’t know much other than what’s been reported.

On a few occasions, mostly during live performances, danger acts on AGT have gone wrong. The worst thing that’s happened to these contestants is being eliminated. Never has the show seen an incident quite like this. Over the years, contestants performing danger acts have always told viewers just how dangerous their attempts were. This built suspense for the viewers, as well as the judges, host and the audience in the room. When Howard Stern was a judge, he even joked that death or a near-death incident would be great for the show’s ratings. Jonathan’s accident may be a wake-up call for viewers and the producers of America’s Got Talent. They are already going into this new spin-off with bad publicity, and who know what else could happen with future contestants on AGT: Extreme or the regular series. For right now, fans are probably most curious about how Jonathan’s accident will be address when the spin-off airs. Perhaps his performances won’t even be shown if NBC or the America’s Got Talent team wish to handle it that way.
