America’s Next Top Model is notable for its intense drama and immensely competitive nature. But, alongside the high fashion photoshoots and runway challenges, every true fan looks forward to the infamous makeover episode which features in every cycle. From the moment the hopeful models are picked, fans begin to wonder who’s going blonde, who’s getting shaved, and who’s getting a weave.
The makeovers – and whether or not the models could pull off their new look – often serve as a “make or break” scenario for a lot of contestants, either benefitting or harming their chances in the competition. Out of the hundreds of makeovers in the last 24 cycles, some were so drastic that they’ve gone down in ANTM history.
Cassandra’s Blonde Pixie Cut
Contestants who hated their makeover look were a dime a dozen, but Cassandra’s “Mia Farrow” inspired makeover in cycle 5 was too much for her. After getting her long brown locks chopped for a super short blonde pixie cut, she was certainly not pleased.
After Tyra herself wasn’t convinced by the cut, she requested another inch and a half be cut off and that became the final straw for Cassandra. She refused the second cut, stating the competition was attempting to change her too much, and left the competition; which she probably should have done before the first cut.
Chelsey’s Tooth Gap
One of the show’s most dramatic and controversial transformations happened outside of the salon in cycle 15, as contestant Chelsey was given a widened tooth gap. Appearing on the show with an already slight gap, Tyra sent Chelsey to the dentist to get a quarter of a millimeter shaved off each front tooth, widening her gap.
Ironically, one of Trya Banks’ most iconic quotes was her critiquing another contestant’s tooth gap, but this disdain is really contradicted by Chelsey’s makeover. While a pixie cut may grow back and a weave could get taken out, a widened tooth gap is forever, leading many viewers to criticize the ANTM team for the procedure.
Jaeda’s Halle Berry Cut
Jaeda featured in cycle 7, one of ANTM’s most binge-worthy cycles. One of the longest-running themes of season was Jaeda’s absolute distaste for her pixie cut makeover – so much so that the episode was titled “The Girl Who Hates Her Hair.” She felt masculinized by the new hairdo and it became her biggest insecurity throughout the competition.
If the hate that Jaeda had for the cut wasn’t enough, it didn’t help that Tyra and the judges insisted that she wasn’t “owning” the hairstyle – and made it a constant point of critique when she was being judged.
Brittany’s Red Weave
There were a few times when Tyra Banks decided to put a weave on a white contestant and it actually looked good; Brittany’s big red curly weave in cycle 8 was not one of those moments. Thankful for not getting her hair cut, Brittany’s relief vanished when she had to spend hours in the salon chair.
However, after a few weeks, the hair became unruly due to Brittany’s lack of knowledge on how to care for it. As a result, the team then had no choice but to remove it.
Allison’s Blonde Weave
On the other end of the weave spectrum, Allison’s platinum blonde dye job and matching extensions actually benefited her through the series and beyond. Complementing her big blue eyes, the new blonde locks gave her an Alice in Wonderland aesthetic.
Going on to become one of the ANTM contestants with the most successful careers, the new hairdo along with her immense talent honed throughout the competition turned out to be beneficial to Allison.
Kayla’s Fire Red Dye Job
Kayla’s fiery transformation in cycle 15 was one of the best makeovers of the entire series. Coming in with blonde, bouncy curls, this new, bold, red hair with a heavy bang was a complete 180-degree turn.
Kayla took the makeover well, embracing it fully as she recognized it was something that would make her stand out and take her to the next level. This new look served her well through the competition as she made it all the way to third place.
Nnenna’s Shaved Head
Tyra and the team gave a lot of contestants pixie cuts throughout the series, but when she went with shaved heads/buzz cuts they always stood out. In cycle 6, Tyra sent contestant Nnenna to the salon to get her already short hair shaved off. The look served her well, especially in one of the best photoshoots in ANTM history.
Banks then repeated the look with Bianca Golden in cycle 9, and the look took her to the final four of that cycle.
Laura’s Patriotic Locks
In ANTM’s British vs USA season, cycle 18, contestant Laura LaFrate got the most patriotic makeover in the series. Her previously big and frizzy brown hair was straightened, dyed platinum blonde, and got paired with bright red and blue clip-ins; emulating the American flag.
Despite the cringe feelings attached to this hairstyle, Laura made it to the top 2, just missing the title to British contestant Sophie Sumner.
