Among Us Developer Bans Hackers & Asks Them To ‘Please Stop’

Among Us hackers are getting ejected into space after the game’s developer hits them with the ban hammer – while being polite about it.

InnerSloth, the developer of Among Us, has started banning hackers and asking them to “please stop” in an all-new ban message. The social deduction game has a few cheats and hacks players can spot during their time playing, including being able to see the imposter, no cool-down timer on killing another player, long-range kills, and more. In a game where teamwork and discussion are paramount to victory – for crewmates – hacking is the best way to see the community enrage.

Among Us released in 2018 but has surged to popularity during 2020 as gamers look for more titles to entertain them during sustained self-imposed COVID-19 quarantine. The game features a team of crewmates who must complete tasks while being hunted by an imposter who works to sabotage them and kill them off one-by-one. Using deduction, teams must discuss who they believe the imposter is after a body is found, and players who are killed cannot participate in the discussion. While being stalked by a killer is terrifying, fulfilling the imposter’s role also requires a bit of tact, such as knowing how to use vents safely.

As more players cry foul when running into hackers, Redditor lukmly013 posted a screenshot showing InnerSloth banning a hacker, accompanied by an all-new that says, “You were banned for hacking. Please stop.” The message is short and sweet, with the concise sincerity that reinforces the passion project that is Among Us, which is developed by a tiny team that is likely overstressed. Lukmly013’s comment for the post has since been removed by the Among Us thread’s moderators, but the image is still present.

Hacking in a multiplayer game is the quickest way to ruin the fun for everyone who wants to play right, especially one as low-stakes as Among Us. The biggest confusion surrounding hacking is what the perpetrators actually gain from it, but (whatever the underlying reasons) the plain fact is that those who engage in it want to win at any cost and everyone else’s expense. Anyone who derives their sense of fun or validation from ruining something for others doesn’t deserves to participate in the game, so InnerSloth’s growing efforts to curb hacking are commendable, and the developer should continue to brandish its banhammer with pride. As the tiny, three-person team inevitably grows, it can be hoped that it’s able to ramp up efforts to make the game as free of cheaters as possible.

Beyond getting a kick out of the undue suffering of others – which isn’t really warranted given the game’s cooperative mechanics and goals – is there any other benefit hackers receive? Hacking is not a measurement of skill and is the epitome of laziness in gaming, but it is a very good way for one to develop an unearned and undeserved sense of superiority. Players should always improve their gameplay the right way, with time and effort, and earn their victories. Otherwise, they should take InnerSloth’s advice to heart and “please stop.”
