An iPhone Or Apple Watch Will Soon Be Enough To Enter Disney World

Apple Watch and iPhone owners will soon be able to use their device to enter Walt Disney World instead of using a MagicBand. The extension of support is not all that surprising, considering the underlying Near Field Communication (NFC) technology available on an iPhone and Apple Watch is similar to what’s used for MagicBand. However, it will offer visitors even more options and another contact-free way to enter the resort.

Much like the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the way Disney World operates. Besides enduring resort closures, the park has also placed a much greater emphasis on the use of its MagicBand for easier and contact-free access, as well as for when purchasing food and merchandise. Now, Disney is looking to offer an almost identical experience with the use of a smartphone or smartwatch.

Disney has confirmed that it will be launching a new MagicMobile service later in 2021, letting Disney World visitors use their iPhone or Apple Watch in replace of a MagicBand. The experience will mostly be the same, with an iPhone or Apple Watch capable of providing entry to the resort and charged for additional services. iPhone and Apple Watch users will need to download the My Disney Experience app to create a Disney MagicMobile pass. This will then be linked to the Apple device and open up the option for visitors to simply hold their phone or watch within close proximity to a touch point.

What About Android Disney World Support?

MagicMobile Android support is likely to arrive in the future. According to the announcement, Disney plans to roll out the feature in stages throughout the year, with Apple devices simply the first in line. Similar to iPhone, the My Disney Experience app is already available to download on Android, so it should only be a matter of updating the app with the same contact-free MagicMobile functionality and support once testing has finished.

In the meantime, and irrespective of when the MagicMobile service launches, visitors can continue to use their MagicBand as normal. Furthermore, MagicMobile is not being positioned as a replacement, but something that will live alongside MagicBand. In the same announcement, Disney also confirmed that it plans to release new MagicBands in new colors and with some featuring Disney characters. In addition, visitors can use both MagicMobile and their MagicBand interchangeably during the same visit. Basically, Disney World visitors will be able to choose whether to use the band, an iPhone or an Apple Watch, depending on which one is more convenient at the time.
