And Just Like That Creator Explains Why Peloton Was Used in [SPOILER]s Death

Warning! SPOILERS ahead for And Just Like That… series premiere.

Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King defended their choice to feature a Peloton bike in the scene where a major character is killed off in the premiere of And Just Like That…. The long-awaited revival of HBO’s mega-hit series dropped last Thursday, Dec. 9 on HBO Max. Original lead stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis returned to reprise their roles as Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. Missing from the reunion is Kim Cattrall who played the sassy publicist Samantha Jones in the original series.

And Just Like That… continues the story of the three fashionable women, who are now navigating New York life in their 50s. The first episode served as a re-introduction of the main characters and laid out what they’ve been up to since audiences saw them in the last Sex and the City movie. It answered why Cattrall’s Samantha isn’t part of the original foursome anymore, as the character had a falling out with Carrie and is now based in London. The pilot episode’s final scene also sees Mr. Big (Chris Noth) suffer a fatal heart attack after a rigorous session on a Peloton bike.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, King discussed Mr. Big’s shocking death and the now-infamous Peloton bike ride. Amid the discussion among fans, the Emmy award-winning director/producer defended the scene and said that the exercise equipment “had nothing to do” with the character’s heart attack. King said that they decided to use the brand because it was current and “the bike of the moment.” In fact, he jokingly admitted that he has a Peloton bike himself. Read his comments below:

“Peloton is the bike of the moment… The fact of the matter is, it could have been any bike. It could have happened walking down the street. It could have happened slipping on a banana peel. It could have happened in his sleep. But what we wanted to do was reflect the world as we know it, and people are exercising on that beautiful, beautiful item. And it’s gorgeous. So it belonged in that bathroom.”

After the dramatic debut of And Just Like That… Peloton became a viral talking point on social media. As the exercise company saw a plunge in their stocks, a Peloton representative reacted to the HBO series and attributed Big’s fatal heart attack to his unhealthy lifestyle and not the fitness machine. Meanwhile, King claimed that the character’s death is a carefully planned event and should contribute to Carrie’s storyline in the revival series.

Undeniably, Big’s exit presents an uncertain future for the show’s main character. Suddenly, Carrie is thrust back into singlehood and anxiety. At 55, the world isn’t the same as when she famously moved from one relationship to another during her 30s in Sex and the City. With eight more episodes of And Just Like That… to go, it’ll be interesting to see how the show will depict the pain of losing someone and how one picks themselves up after such sadness. More than a glossy reboot, And Just Like That… prompts its viewers to re-examine life and the realities of love and loss.
