Vacation Friends is ready to party when it premieres August 27 on Hulu. The film is a romcom and buddy comedy all rolled into one, centering on two couples who could not be more different from one another. When the uptight Marcus (Lil Rel Howery, Free Guy) and Emily (Yvonne Orji, Insecure) meet the wild and crazy Ron (John Cena, F9) and Kyla (Meredith Hagner, Palm Springs) in Mexico, their lives will never be the same.

Just after getting engaged, Marcus and Emily run into – or rather get playfully ambushed by – Ron and Kyla, and the fearsome foursome make it a vacation to remember. But after a few incidents they would rather forget, the couples part ways to return to real life, which includes Emily’s dad Harold (Robert Wisdom, Ballers), and brother, Gabe (Andrew Bachelor, better known as King Bach) disapproving of Marcus.

Bachelor and Wisdom spoke with Screen Rant about the family dynamic at the heart of their behavior, and their own personal vendettas against Marcus and later Ron.

Screen Rant: We don’t get to see a lot of the family dynamic or your relationship with Emily, but I can extrapolate what it is like based on your feelings for Marcus. Starting with Robert, can you talk about how Harold feels about his baby girl?

Robert Wisdom: Well, she’s my princess. Everything that I’ve done, I’ve done for them, for my son and my daughter. And on this day, it’s her crowning – the beginning of a new life and a family – and I want everything to be as perfect as it can.

That’s what I do with my world: provide a sense of perfection, and we’ve arrived, and all of that. And then the window cracks, and we get these crazy people who I don’t really know what to do with it. That’s kind of what the framing is. That’s all I’m about, just the love for my family.

Andrew, you have a little bit more personal dislike of Marcus. What is that dynamic like, and how was it getting punched in the face on screen?

Andrew Bachelor: Yeah, I think it was the element of protecting my sister. Our family has a legacy and my character feels like [Marcus] shouldn’t be a part of that legacy. He doesn’t deserve it. He’s trying to take a shortcut to success, and there’s no shortcuts in life. So, get out of here, Marcus. He didn’t like that, so he punched me in the face.

On the other hand, Ron immediately lights up the room when he comes in. Robert, can you talk a little bit about how Harold takes to him?

Robert Wisdom: I won’t go into a whole lot, but what I will say is anybody that crashes a car into my party is going to be my enemy. And he is my enemy, so I don’t care how much light he brings. I’m putting the light out. I’m the light in the room, and my kids.

Finally, what is coming next for both of you?

Andrew Bachelor: I just did a film called National Champions with J.K. Simmons and Tim Blake Nelson that’ll be coming out in November.

Robert Wisdom: I have A Journal for Jordan that Denzel Washington directed, that’s coming out on Christmas, and Blackbird, which Dennis Lehane – who was one of our writers on The Wire – wrote. That’ll be on Apple TV early next year.
