Andy Serkis is stepping into the director’s chair for Venom: Let Their Be Carnage. The sequel to 2018’s Venom sees Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and his alien symbiote protecting the city from serial killer Celtus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) and Carnage. Serkis was personally picked by Hardy and Sony to take over the role of director after Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the first movie, was unable to return.

Serkis spoke to Screen Rant about why he wanted to direct Venom 2, other Marvel characters he’d like to see in the movies, and how Venom is a love story. He also talks about his role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman.

Screen Rant: This movie is so much fun. I know Tom Hardy personally asked you to be a part of the sequel. What was it about the Venom-verse where you said, “Oh, yes, I want to do this.”

Andy Serkis: Well, it was absolutely because I love what Tom did in the first movie, and Tom and I had wanted to work together for years. So it was just a golden opportunity to play in an environment where you’ve got these marginal characters, dysfunctional, screwed-up characters, and then the introduction of this incredible nemesis character of Carnage. We were working with Woody who I know well from the Planet of the Apes movies. So working with two incredible actors going head to head, and of course the other, Michelle Williams, the other actors, and Naomie Harris, it was a no-brainer. It was an absolute no-brainer.

Tom told me he’s constantly thinking about the possibilities of Venom and the very sandboxes that he could play in. There’s rumors about what the post-credits scene could be. I don’t know. What’s your ideal scenario of what comes next?

Andy Serkis: Wow. I know everyone is desperate for Venom to meet Spider-Man. I know that.

But I think there’s real mileage in some of the other supervillains that reside in Ravencroft. There’s such fertile ground to be uncovered there. That would be the sandbox I’d be really interested in playing. Who’s lurking in there that could break out?

Who would you like to see? Any ideas?

Andy Serkis: Well…

You have something in mind, I can tell! Would you be game to direct another Venom movie?

Andy Serkis: Oh, for sure, without question. It’s just been one of those joyful jobs where, like I said, just working with great talent, working with amazing ideas. To work with Bob Richardson again, it’s the second time I’ve worked with him on a movie, who is just brilliant as a cinematographer on this, blending the reality with the very unforgiving designs of Carnage and Venom and making them seamlessly come together. So yeah, of course, I would. And Sheena Duggal, the visual effects supervisor. She was incredible to work with as well. She’d worked on the first movie.

So yeah, what’s not to like? Kelly Marcel and Thomas taking firm control of the story and writing the scripts in the way that they’ve done and just… It’s been great, so yeah.

One of Tom Hardy’s stand-out performances of his career is Bane, and now you’re heading to Gotham as Alfred in The Batman reuniting with Matt Reeves, working with Rob Pattinson. How has that experience been? How would you say that your Alfred is a different Alfred from what we’ve seen before?

Andy Serkis: I’ve been totally forbidden to speak about The Batman, of course, but what I will say is that I’m pretty certain Matt Reeves, who is a very dear friend of mine and of course we’ve worked together on the Planet of the Apes movies, I know for a fact he’s making a pretty amazing picture. I really think it’s going to be special.

Venom is exploring this love story and I love that. It’s just like after the honeymoon phase ends, did you approach it like you would like a rom-com love story?

Andy Serkis: Partly, partly, yeah. The big challenge for this whole thing was getting the tone exactly right so that you could have multiple things going on. You can go way with the comedy. You could go with the romance. There are multiple love stories too. It’s not just Eddie and Venom, of course. It’s Eddie and Anne. It’s Venom and Anne. It’s Shriek and Cletus. Even Cletus and Eddie have a strange bond and a strange relationship. I think, again, going back to the tone, if you can have fun in all of these different directions, as long as you remain true to the stakes of the characters and their journeys and belief and really invest in them, all of them.
