Disappointed by the title’s lackluster anniversary event, Genshin Impact players have turned their anger towards other unrelated games. The action role-playing game, developed by miHoYo, was released back in September 2020. The game’s dedicated playerbase was left largely unsatisfied by Genshin Impact’s one-year anniversary rewards, which has resulted in massive backlash against miHoYo.

Genshin Impact’s first year has been a big success, with miHoYo continuing to support the game through seasonal content. New playable characters, weapons, locations and quests are added to the role-playing adventure on a regular basis, ensuring the experience stays fresh for long-time players. However, the announcement of the in-game rewards being offered for the game’s one-year anniversary of release resulted in immediate and volatile backlash. Rather than an in-game event, miHoYo instead decided to implement several real-world events such as a photo contest, cosplay contest and fan art contest. Many of these events offer real-world rewards, such as Apple and Razor products, which led to accusations that Genshin Impact’s one-year anniversary was being used as a simple advertisement opportunity. Disgruntled players subsequently review-bombed Genshin Impact, with users condemning miHoYo as lazy and dramatically dropping the action role-playing game’s online user scores.

As reported by Kotaku, angry fans have now begun review-bombing titles other than Genshin Impact itself. A long list of titles, including Honkai Impact, Tears of Themis, Clash of Clans and League of Legends: Wild Rift, are now being bombarded by negative reviews from players. Some reviews for other games are actually positive, but also mention Genshin Impact as a negative comparison. Honkai Impact and Tears of Themis, two games that were also developed by miHoYo, seemed to receive the brunt of this negative review bombing.

Despite this sudden and extremely volatile backlash against miHoYo and Genshin Impact, the developer continues to support the popular title with new content. The developer recently set a date and time for a Version 2.2 livestream, which will reveal details about the title’s next big seasonal update. The 2.2 update, titled “Into the Perilous Labyrinth of Fog,” will reportedly include a brand-new unlockable hero named Thoma. As with most updates to Genshin Impact, new questlines and other pieces of content are also expected to arrive when it launches.

While criticism about Genshin Impact’s anniversary event may be justified, retaliation against completely separate titles is not. Unrelated titles such as Clash of Clans and League of Legends should not factor into the discussion at all, and even miHoYo’s other releases like Honkai Impact are irrelevant to the anniversary discussion. While a lack of in-game rewards for the role-playing game’s anniversary is understandably upsetting, it’s odd at best to see the community go after completely unrelated titles.
