Animal Crossing BuildaBear Restock Time Announced For Tomorrow

Fans who missed the first round of Animal Crossing: New Horizons plushes from Build-A-Bear Workshop will get another shot at ordering their own on April 27, the retailer has revealed. The last round of Animal Crossing teddy bears went almost as quickly as they came, and it seems the restock will follow suit.

Build-a-Bear and Nintendo partnered to put two characters, Isabelle and Tom Nook on sale on April 6. Buyers could choose between two sound options: 5-in-1 effects unique to each character (including reactions and their Animalese voices) or the Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme song. To date, there aren’t any public plans to add more clothes, sounds, or accessories to either character, but a third character is due to join the lineup sometime this summer. It hasn’t been confirmed who it will be, but another fan favorite NPC such as K.K. Slider seems like a safer bet than any villagers.

Now, Build-A-Bear announces the date of the awaited restock as tomorrow, April 27 in a mailing list email. The digital sale officially begins at 8 AM PDT/11 AM Eastern, with a “pre-waiting room” opening 30 minutes earlier. The company notes that people who join the pre-waiting room any time before the sale’s start will be assigned a random spot in the queue, while people who join afterward will automatically be put at the back of the line. Prices start at $51 for each character, and signing up for a Bonus Club account may speed up the checkout process.

The company states up front that owing to “high demand and limited quantities,” it doesn’t expect to have enough units to sell to everyone in tomorrow morning’s waiting room. It is planning further restocks, though, and still aims to offer the plushes in its retail Build-a-Bear Workshop locations in Summer 2021. It has yet to offer more precise details on either count. For the time being, maintaining the waiting room system drives up demand and prevents unsold inventory, while simultaneously deterring all but the most determined scalpers. The scheme is similar to Apple’s iPhone launch strategy, which likewise counts on limited units and anti-scalping policies.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to be a runaway sensation for Nintendo, which could help to explain the developer’s partnership with Build-A-Bear. If the teddy bear seller is tapping into even a fraction of the game’s high sales and acclaim, it’s no doubt eager to restock Animal Crossing plushes until player demand finally subsides.
